Multiple National award winning film Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea had its first trailer release today and the Priyadarshan directed period war-drama has Mohanlal playing Kunjali Marakkar IV aka Mohammed Ali. Originally from Arabia, Marakkars defended Portuguese invasion in the present day Kerala between 1520 - 1600 and Mohanlal's character was the last of them.
Mohammed Ali had rescued a Chinese boy named Chinali (Jay J. Jakkrit) from Portugese enslavement, and together they terrorized the opposite camp. However when the Portuguese convinced the Zamorin (the local King) in 1598 that Marakkar IV intended to take over his kingdom, they joined forces, bringing an end to the Marakkar line.
The movie is expected to depict how valiantly Mohammed Ali fought the first war before he was duped into surrender and hanged to death in 1600. Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea is set to release in theaters on December 2, 2021 in Malayalam and Tamil.
