When Ponniyin Selvan was launched by Mani Ratnam and Lyca Productions, the plan was to make it in two parts. Part 1 of the movie which is based on an eponymous novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy is now finally gearing up for a release in Summer, 2022 i.e. between April and June that year. 

The big budget period drama which has A.R. Rahman for music will resume shooting next week. The team will be canning scenes at Pondicherry first and then will move to Hyderabad. This last schedule is expected to be wrapped by end of August, 2021. 

Ponniyin Selvan primarily revolves around the three children of King Sundara Chola - Aditya Karikalan (Vikram), Kundavai (Trisha) and the titular character alias Arulmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi). Karthi plays Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan, a trusted aide, bodyguard to Vikram and Trisha's love interest whereas Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be seen in dual roles of Queen Mandakini and her daughter Nandini, the main antagonist of the story.
