PUBLISHED DATE | 17/Dec/2020

Weekly Earworm:

The roundup of the recent music releases happened over past few months. Though the theatrical releases are completely stopped, OTT movies and the upcoming movies featured repeat worthy tracks from Ghibran, Harris and few other composers.

Maara (Tamil): Ghibran: Azhage: Ghibran's Maara sounds more like a composer returning to his form after a long slumber and the three tracks have a lush, expansive and lilting feel in the arrangements which befits the protagonist's vagabond character. Oh Azhage with its punchy rhythm, ambient sounds, and Benny Dayal 's effortless high notes lift up the mood of the song. Thamarai is in her stellar form throughout the soundtrack as usual.

Maara (Tamil): Ghibran: Oru Arai Unadhu: Ghibran ups his ante further in Oru Arai unadhu with its lush Celtic arrangements and of course, Yazin Nizar's spectacular vocals backed up by Sanah Moidutty. Particularly loved Thamarai's interesting wordplay splitting things between two leads. Ghibran employed Sanah's vocals brilliantly interwoven with Yazin's during the first half and she is terrific with the second half solo rendition.

Dhruva Natchathiram (Tamil): Harris Jayaraj: Oru Manam: Harris -Gautham combo is back after 2015 Yennai Arindhaal for Dhruva Natchathiram and the hummable tune works wonderfully. The charanam has an impeccable influence of Rahman's early work nevertheless the tune is immensely enjoyable and it turns much better with Shashaa Tirupati's vocals.  Thamarai delivers her best with Gautham and she aces as usual with her poetic lyrics.

Jagame Thandhiram (Tamil): Santosh Narayanan: Bujji: Santosh Narayanan utilized the exuberant Michael Jackson's beat template and churned out an interesting concoction of his own sensibilities with respect to the tune. The main sore point of this track is Vivek's pedestrian lyrics. Ron Miller and Naveen's fantastic bass work propped up by Anirudh's buoyant singing.

Chakra (Tamil): Yuvan Shankar Raja: Harla Farla: Madhan Karky's patchy lyrics aside especially in the pallavi, Yuvan kept the song simple and catchy enough to grab the listener's attention. The song works effectually with Sanjana Kalmanje fares a tad better with respect to the rendition.

Bhoomi (Tamil): Imman: Kadai Kannaley: Imman - Shreya Goshal  combo hardly disappoints and Kadai Kannaley also works effortlessly along with the magical Thamarai's verses. Imman goes for synth sounds in the background while the tune stays core to Imman's tried and tested structure. Imman employed Kishore's Sitar brilliantly and the tune turns lovely especially

Mudhal Nee Mudivum Nee (Tamil): Darbuka SIva: Mudhal Nee Mudivum Nee: Darbuka Siva - Thamarai - Sid Sriram returns back for another stellar track which sounds more like the extension of Maruvaarthai from ENPT. The thumpy rhythm is adorned here by Debasmitha Bhattacharya and as the composer note mentioned sarod comes as another vocal interacts with Sid Sriram's rendition.

Putham Pudhu Kaalai (Tamil): Govind Vasantha : Kanna Thoodhu Poda: The anthology film involves two composers GV Prakash Kumar and Govind Vasantha. Though most of the fun tracks in the album come from GV Prakash, the piece de resistance of the soundtrack is definitely Govind Vasantha's Kanna Thoodhu Poda for Gautham Vasudev Menon. The track reminds Yuvan's Kanda Naal Mudhal title track and Govind Vasantha kept the background simple with Kanjira dominating throughout. Bombay Jayashree is spectacular as always crooning Madhan Karky's lovable lyrics.
