Sangu Chakkaram Review - Unadulterated fantasy entertainer for kids

Sangu Chakkaram is one of those rare films made for kids. The team, led by director Maarison and producers Sathish and Rajkumar, deserves a round of applause for ambitiously venturing into this territory. The film features many kids - new and slightly experienced, and all of them are natural and cute on screen. Baby Monica (Bairavaa, Balloon) and Nishesh (Pasanga 2) are particularly talented and have it in them to go a long way.

Like other horror films, Sangu Chakkaram is also set in a haunted house and a majority of the film happens inside. Along with the kids, a group of adults are also inside the house and each of them has his own agenda and a dark motive. Unexpectedly, there is no melodramatic back story for the ghosts (a mother and her child). There aren't any songs to hamper the flow, either. The 2nd half scenes, when the kids question the ghosts boldly, are entertaining. Some thought provoking dialogues are also part of the mix. Also, don't miss the funny end credits roll and the Superstar Rajinikanth touch. You will leave the theater smiling.

The VFX work is impressive and the makeup for the ghosts also serves the purpose. For a small budget film, such quality work is all the more praiseworthy. Among the other actors, Dhilip Subbarayan is an energetic presence with his 'Daaru Damaaru' punchline and brings out a few laughs. His makeover (resembling cricketer Lasith Malinga) is striking. Dhilip also has a meaty role in this week's other new release Ulkuthu. He also happens to be the producer of another new release Balloon. Quite an eventful week indeed for this stunt master turned actor. 'Punnagai Poo' Gheetha isn't a convincing choice. The closeup shots of her in ghost makeup with the same set of expressions are an eyesore. None of the other adult characters make much of an impact!

Bottom line
Sangu Chakkaram is clearly meant for the kids. As an adult, you may not enjoy a majority of the film but the little ones may find it engaging. Take them along for this unadulterated 'kids satire' horror entertainer. As long as the kids hold center stage, Sangu Chakkaram is fairly cute.
