Karan Johar acquires rights for Marathi film 'Sairat'

Sairat was the first Marathi film to cross Rs. 100 crore in earnings. The movie was a tragic love story starring Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar. Director-producer Karan Johar has acquired the rights for a Hindi remake.

According to the latest report by Pinkvilla, Bollywood director Karan Johar has reportedly bought the rights for a Hindi remake. Karan Johar's Dharma Productions will be co-producing the film in association with Zee. The Hindi remake is already in the scripting stage and will have an all new cast, and will be helmed by one of Dharma's new directors.

A tale of star-crossed lovers, Sairat is the story of a poor boy Prashant and a rich girl Archana who fall in love with each other and elope when society does not tolerate them being together. Sairat's screenplay has massive overtones of caste-discrimination though there is no direct reference or mention of it in the film.
