Bairavaa controversy plagues Thalapathy 62: Kerala Film Distributors' Association issue notice!

In December 2016, the Malayalam film industry witnessed a stand-off among the Kerala Film Producers' Council, Film Distributors Association (FDA) and the Kerala Film Exhibitor's Federation, for the Exhibitors had demanded a 50-50 share on profits, strongly opposed by the producers and distributors. At that time, G.K. Suresh Kumar, father of actor Keerthy Suresh and secretary of the Producers' Council was accused by the Exhibitors' Federation head to be stalling a solution for the strike so as to have no competition for his daughter's movie Bairavaa, that was to release in January, 2017.

This feud and the strike resulted in theaters not screening Bairavaa in the state for a long time and IFAR International and Sayujam who had bought the films' rights for a record deal of Rs. 7.03 crore suffered huge losses. Now, everytime a Vijay's film is up for a release, the FDA issues a notice warning the theaters to not screen a Vijay film until the losses incurred from Bairavaa are settled.

After coming up with strong opposition for Mersal, the FDA has recently issued notice to theaters to not screen Vijay's upcoming film Thalapathy 62 (working title) which incidentally also has Keerthy Suresh playing female lead. It is worth mentioning here that despite the opposition, Mersal went on to become one of the most successful releases in Kerala last year.
