Muthina Kathirika - Where are the jokes?

Plot: It is about a middle aged guy who has two main goals in life. To marry a girl of his choice and to succeed big in politics. He has obstacles on both these counts and the source of the former is quite interesting.

You should obviously go into every film with an open mind and see what it has got to offer. But this is easier said than done. The names associated with a film and the type of promotions the makers dish out does subconsciously calibrate your expectations at times. Going by this and a title like Muthina Kathirika you do not expect subtlety or finesse in treatment. You do know that it would be loud and brash. This is nothing to be ridiculed. This is a type of film and you do need all these types to coexist. Everything neat and tight might lead to mundaneness. The only reason for someone who does not like this brashness to take a ticket to this film would be that he is willing to trade-off the lack of subtlety for a few whole hearted laughs. But when you do not get those in return it certainly leads to some exasperation.

The film does have scope for enough laughter and certainly actors who can act as the medium to achieve this. But nothing actually comes together. The only solace is that the scenes keep moving quite rapidly.  The film did leave me with one question though. Why is no one calling this film bold? We have the hero who still gives a shy glance to his now married former lover who too reciprocates this. Not quite bold you might think until I tell you that she would be his future mother in law!!! Heck, there is even a scene where she catches him in his birth suit below the waist and she hardly turns away.

Bottomline:

You go in wanting to laugh out loud. But the film throws a googly and you end up crying out loud at times!!!
