Neeraj Ghaywan applies balm on the cracked heels of a world pulling apart

The film's gaze and the matte finish sometimes give the proceedings the feel of an explainer on the fault lines in Indian society for a global audience. Towards the end, it appears that the complexity of Peers perspective has been papered over, perhaps to avoid censorship. For instance, the fact that Shoaibs struggle with the arbitrariness of the lockdown continued even after the health department officials discovered them on the road has been glossed over. Still, Homebound is a significant document of our times when social trust seems to be in a long-term decline and is a worthy bet for the elusive Oscar.(more)

A haunting reflection on apathy and relentless pursuit of respect

The performances are outstanding. Ishaan Khatter delivers a career-defining performancemeasured, magnetic, and mature. With a powerful screen presence and wisdom beyond his years, he firmly cements his place among the best actors of his generation. Homebound is a role he truly deserves. Vishal Jethwa is equally rivetingraw, honest, and an absolute revelation. Its refreshing to see him embody Chandan with such restraint and depth. Shalini Vatsa, as Chandans mother, leaves a lasting impression with quiet grace. Janhvi Kapoor is sincere in her brief appearance. Homebound raises many questions. How did we get here? What has made us so bereft of empathy and compassion? A soul-stirring observation of a world growing cold, this is filmmaking at its finest.(more)

Highly Recommended

Homebound is shot without any fake embellishment. Pratik Shah's camera is unflinching in showing the ugliness of the spaces the underprivileged are forced to inhabit. The film is deeply moving and the director's view of social reality is profoundly compassionate. That it comes with film festival accolades and the Martin Scorcese stamp of approval should not matter. What matters is the achievement is that Ghaywan's independent voice is allowed to be heard over the current din of Bollywood blockbusters.(more)
