Kajol Show All The Way But Film Falls Flat

Kajol's well-intentioned film keeps first half loose, second half muddled

The film itself falters in the way it keeps its first half loose, and the second half muddled. The curse of the demon and its desire to keep procreating to overrun the world versus the Kali-avatar that Ambika takes on, to embody good women vs evil men, and to celebrate the power of womanhood, needed a clearer, more gripping narrative.(more)

MAA is a one of a kind mythological horror film.

Kajol delivers a smashing performance and proves yet again why she is one of the finest actors of our times. She is exceptionally fiery in the climax. Kherin Sharma lends able support. Ronit Roy is the surprise of the film and this is surely one of his most accomplished performances. (more)

Kajol's film takes it's time- and yours -- but forgets to bring the horror in this mythological drama

To sum it up, Maa has all the right ingredients, from maternal rage to a haunted village. But the makers throw all of it into a cauldron and forget to turn the heat up. It wants to say something powerful about a mother pulling out all stops for her children, but sadly the beating heart is buried underneath the conventional storyline.(more)
