Critics Review

A Lijo-world with a Mammootty awesomeness

Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam generated massive interest at the International Film Festival of Kerala in December, thanks to the Mammootty-Lijo combination. The film looks like it will continue to generate a buzz at its theatrical run.(more)

Mammootty's meditation on universality of human nature

The quietness of the village is constantly disturbed by sound emerging from the programmes running on a black-and-white television. Lijo uses the television as part of the background score, adding to the atmosphere and layer of the narrative. Cinematographer Theni Eswars camera beautifully captures the beauty and tranquility of the village. The visuals are almost meditative. Every frame tells more than one story. At the height of the drama, a single shot frames James wife and Sundarams wife together. They both have lost their husbands. While they may have grown up in different places, situations, and cultures and speak different languages, the grief each feel is the same. Its universal and this is the most humane moment of the film.(more)

Mammootty and LJP shoulder a whimsical tale of re-awakenings

Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam is its immersive central performance. This is a choice of film that harks back to the Mammootty who took risks like Sathyan Anthikads Artham (1989) and Venus Munnariyippu (2014). The thespian does not give either James or Sundaram any quirks, yet masterfully conveys their divergent personalities leaving us in no doubt as to who is who and when. If Rorschach and Puzhu last year hinted at it, this team-up with Lijo confirms that Mammootty is steering his career into a whole new experimental phase, embracing not just the sort of middle-of-the-road, slice-of-life ventures that have endeared Malayalam cinema to a pan-India audience, but also entering an unapologetically philosophical arena.(more)
