Even Nawazuddin Siddiqui Can't Salvage This Unfunny Film

The romance between the gawky hero and the garrulous heroine, which occupies a large chunk of the first half, is numbingly insipid. But that isn't the worst part of the film. When the duo struggles to settle into domesticity, the film turns even more wearisome, leaving Siddiqui to scamper around in a bid to clean up the mess without any support from the script or the rest of the cast. Give Motichoor Chaknachoor a miss if you value your time - and sanity.(more)

Nawazuddin Siddiqui tries hard in a deeply problematic film

While till interval Motichoor Chaknachoor keeps it light and frothy, buoyed by the its breezy jokes, it starts sinking in the second half. While admittedly it never turns preachy, spicing even emotional tracts with comedy (watch out for the scene where Nawazuddin wizens up to his mother's plotting), it does start to show the cracks in the second half. A farcical climax and a Sunny Leone song don't help either.(more)

Athiya Shetty springs a surprise in this otherwise tedious film.

In one contrived moment, Pushpinder's sensitive, sensible persona takes a brutish turn but instead of him feeling ashamed it's Anita who is brought to heel. Chaknachoor, indeed.(more)

A largely unaware script that manages to make meaningful social comment

Shetty throws her all into playing that one-dimensional small-town girl, but, pitted against Siddiqui, Chibber etc, the mismatch in aptitude is unambiguous. Within a regressive set-up, Pandey, Chibber and Siddiqui find nuance to their characters. However, the largely unaware script (Meghvrat Singh Gurjar, Biswal) does manage to make meaningful comments on dowry and the aspirational fascination with NRI life.(more)

Opposites don't attract

Bhopal offers some respite from the ususal UP-Punjab setting though the lingo hamau (us), tumau (you), pin (but) takes a while to get used to. What is strange, however, is the way the lyrics lapse into instant Punjabi. So the modhi (gal) in the dialogues turns into kudi in the songs. Out of place and a tad hard to stomach that.(more)

A mediocre fare

Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Athiya Shetty, in particular, are likeable for the sheer effortlessness with which they get into their half-baked characters, as is the film's prop cast - many of who are unknown faces to even regular Bollywood buffs.(more)
