Sui Dhaaga - Made In India

Critics Review

Strong performances and fine moments that weave into a convincing story.

In a winning first half, he successfully establishes his main characters and their problems. Smart usage of humour in dialogues ups the entertainment quotient, even when the going gets tough for the characters. Films songs and background score lend gravitas to the story. While the narrative doesn't get too preachy or predictable, the second half is simply convenient. Also, while Mauji's struggle for self-employment finds ample mention, there isn't much to justify his excellence in the craft, except his failed legacy.(more)

Anushka Sharma, Varun Dhawan Stitch Together Agreeable Underdog Tale

Sui Dhaaga falls well short of perfection, but it never comes unstuck. It passes muster as a wholesome entertainer embellished with humour, warmth, authentic emotional trappings and actors adept at going seamlessly along with the flow. Definitely worth the price of the ticket, if not more.(more)

Anushka Sharma, Varun Dhawan's film is not even as exciting as embroidery

Katariya's films have interesting, nuanced asides and routinely good dialogues, but despite all that this film doggedly refuses to get interesting. The background score balloons in orchestral style when things are sad, and becomes merrily desi whenever things on screen should be celebrated. Lyricist Varun Grover writes some simply evocative lines, though I found it interesting that this proudly make-in-India film chose Anu Malik, a composer known for making knock-offs of better, more established products and defiantly appropriating them. Sui Dhaaga is a feel-good film about dignity of labour, and the honest toil of a hard-working tailor. Too bad it feels machine-made.(more)

The Varun and Anushka starrer is nice, safe and staid

The final half hour of Sui Dhaaga is a departure from the realism of the rest of the film and enters a fantasy realm that commercial Bollywood tends to prefer. This portion is what gives the film a slightly uneven feel, but the trip till then is so rewarding, so amusing, so steeped in tenderness, affection for the characters and positivity that it makes the ride with Mamta, Mauji and their charmingly eccentric family and friends completely worth it.(more)

The Varun and Anushka starrer is nice, safe and staid

Sui Dhaaga is well made. It's nice and safe and staid. There are several moments that warm the heart, and you cheer when sui-dhaaga win over needle-and-thread. But you always knew they were going to, didn't you?(more)

SUI DHAAGA MADE IN INDIA is a simple tale told beautifully with strong emphasis on emotions.

Anil Mehta's cinematography is too good and doesn't get lost in capturing the simplicity of the village or the glitz and glamour of the city life. The lensman captures only what's essential. Meenal Agarwal's production design is realistic. Darshan Jalan and Neelanchal Kumar Ghosh's costume designers deserve brownie points as it's one of the pillars of the film. Charu Shree Roys editing is simple and neat.(more)
