Rajkummar Rao Is Perfect As The Eponymous Everyman

Newton sweeps nothing under the carpet, but it does not revel in muck-raking either. Its jibes at India's electoral system, bureaucracy and law and order machinery are always cloaked in gentility but are never less than trenchant and to the point. It is highly entertaining and gloriously illuminating: a rare feat that anybody that loves intelligent cinema must vote for with his/her feet.(more)

Newton isn't a movie of answers, but tough questions

Amit Masurkar, the young writer-director, seems to be suggesting something original, but also depressing: That an idealist in today's world does not risk death or persecution as much as he risks being classified as a 'bore'.(more)

Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi Shine In This Political Film

Amit Masurkar's Newton, Tripathi plays Aatma Singh, an army officer who has looked over many an election in many a war-torn part of the country. He is currently posted in the forests of Chhatisgarh, in a Naxal-controlled area with more landmines than there are voters. One morning before he can start on his breakfast eggs, he meets a presiding election officer called Newton who wants - exasperatingly enough - to do everything by the book. The film is, for the most part, about the day they spend together.(more)

This Rajkummar Rao film is as sharp and subversive as Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro

Rajkummar Rao is enjoying a purple patch. After Bareilly Ki Barfi, here he is again stitching up a big performance full of small things: blinking, thinking, doing. He is at his most interesting when he is being quiet: he makes us watch. (more)

Rajkummar Rao's black comedy is the finest Hindi film of 2017

dealism breathes in every frame of Masurkar's second film thanks to its dutiful and open-minded hero Newton Kumar (Rajkummar Rao in yet another terrific performance) who becomes a presiding officer after a colleague backs out under the pretext of health and family issues. In a lovely tribute to the scientist who inspires the eponymous character's name, we first see Newton eating an apple and reading an election commission manual. He may not be generating brilliant ideas of his own but he sees merit in the ideas already laid on paper and keen to follow them to see great results.(more)

Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi make this movie the pick of the week

Masurkar makes humour his weapon of choice and sets up a satire that leaves you entertained, but also brings to fore some uncomfortable questions. He also manages to stay neutral and doesn't pass a judgement on any of the sides(more)

RAJKUMMAR RAO CARRIES THE WEIGHT OF HIS CHARACTER'S FINER VIRTUES IN DIRECTOR AMIT MASURKAR'S POLITICAL SATIRE

Director Amit Masurkar packs in humour, tension and even adventure, in this political satire that despite being largely uneventful, keeps one interested and concerned about the proceedings on the screen. Such a film could've given into gimmicks by having the lead drop monologues or by including a dramatic point of epiphany. But it chooses instead to allow characters respond to situations more naturally and in most cases, in sync with reality. The film's background score by Benedict Taylor and Naren Chandavarkar complements the mood and helps evoke a decided positivity that infuses hope, even when the visuals offer none.(more)
