This Madhur Bhandarkar film on Emergency is worse than Emergency
Madhur Bhandarkar has tried to pull all stops to sell his Emergency drama as a film shorn of all mention of Indira Gandhi or the Congress. So let's begin with the very title of the film. It is called 'Indu Sarkar'. A pun as subtle as a gun on Indira Gandhi's Sarkar. Kirti Kulhari has the burden of steering this drama forward. Her character is named Indu Sarkar (and you thought this was a movie on the Indira Gandhi government? Duh.).(more)

A Nice, Interesting Film
The film will appeal to the young generation of today who did not find Emergency as a chapter in their history books but are curious to learn about it. Also a lot of films have not been made on the topic. It�s a nice attempt by Madhur Bhandarkar, who is known for his wonderful style of storytelling.(more)

An artless propaganda movie
In a movie deeply concerned with public good, the extras are all made to mime in chorus: Bhandarkar was too concerned about the lead players to give any directions to those in the crowd. And the lead players themselves don�t get to discover any humanity within Bhandarkar�s unpleasant vision of the world: he vasectomises them.(more)

A watered-down, bloodless version of the Emergency
Indu Sarkar is set during the Emergency, and shows us the horrific violation of freedom put into motion by then prime minister Indira Gandhi, aided and abetted by her younger son Sanjay: insiders say he coerced her into a declaration, because if the formidable Mrs G had a weakness, it was Sanjay. The forced sterilization (nasbandi), the breaking up of �jhuggi-jhompris�, the sweeping up and arrest of all those in opposition, and the entire system being suborned and subverted: it�s all there.(more)

Movie Review
The movie presents a fairly irregular account of the 19 months of Emergency in hurried montages. The party leaders are overtly villainous and members of the rebellious Himmat India Sangathan (including Indu) are overwhelmingly righteous; Bhandarkar fails to achieve political neutrality. Another issue is the film�s dialogue by Sanjay Chhel; some fantastic lines get lost in throwaway scenes and clich�s like, "gareebon ko jeene ka haq nahi hai?" take prominence. Halfway through the movie, when you�re just getting used to the pace, a surprise qawwali jumps at you and throws you off.(more)

Madhur Bhandarkar's Film Is A Vapid, Political Potboiler
Lack of genuine creative acuity and a cavalier attitude to period details are the film's biggest drawbacks. The former glitch derails, among other things, the characterization of the then Prime Minister's son (played pretty competently by Neil Nitin Mukesh but to no avail), who emerged as an extra-constitutional authority calling the shots in Delhi during the 21 months that the nation was under Emergency.(more)
