Tapsee Pannu shines in this predictable spin-off

Tapsee Pannu as Shabana is spectacular. Awe-stuck by her actions scenes and the emotional journey she takes her character through is marvellous to see. This girl has a lot of potential and is definitely here to stay. Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher and Akshay Kumar are a treat to watch as always. Prithvirajs role lacked substance and the performance also didnt look as dreadful as it shouldve been.(more)

A not so well paced thriller goes haywire

Known for making content driven films like A Wednesday and Baby, Naam Shabana is surely a disappointment from producer-writer Neeraj Pandey. However, the flak also goes to director Shivam Nair for a poor execution. First half is flat but raises high hopes in the second half but by then it is too late to even like it. Neeraj Pandey must have thought that Taapsee Pannus current status in the industry might work for the film but fails to impress in every possible way. In the recent past, we saw films like Akira and Pink, which deal with the plot better than Naam Shabana. However, one must say, films like Kahaani and Queen have opened doors for female centric films in Bollywood. However, Naam Shabana doesnt stand out in its pace and thrilling element.(more)

Movie Review

Shivam Nair surely does a decent job in directing the thriller film but its the weak and disjointed screenplay that acts as a spoilsport. As mentioned earlier, the film enjoys a lot of cinematic liberties. The final execution plan shown in the film comes across as extremely convenient. It just does not have any kind of shocking or thrilling or surprise element, which one expects from a film of this genre. As the film progresses into the second half, it starts becoming very predictable. All of this just does not take away the fact that, as compared to his earlier films, Shivam Nair has improved by leaps and bounds as a filmmaker with NAAM SHABANA. - See more at: http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/movie/naam-shabana/critic-review/#sthash.nUWWbo7J.dpuf(more)

The Baby spin-off works only thanks to Taapsee Pannu and Akshay Kumar

he concept of having prequels/spinoffs is alien to Bollywood, and the makers need to be lauded for taking a risky path and offering something new to the audience. Baby was one of the most loved movies in 2015, and Taapsees track, even though it was a small one, was one of its best parts. We had this curiosity to see more of her character in action, so we welcomed the idea of her having a solo movie. It also helps that Taapsee is a fine actress and she holds the film, well most of it, on her slender but strong shoulders. (more)

Taapsee Pannus action, Akshay Kumar are highlights of this film

Many of the characters show up from Pandeys Baby (2015) including Pannus Shabana who had bit part; Naam Shabana tells us just how she came to be a special agent skilled with her hands. Pannu left an impression in that brief role. Here, she gets a role many leading ladies would kill for, and she makes us believe it is her doing the action, not a body double, but she is strangely held in, and strictly one-note. Did she get stymied by the demands of her part, or was she instructed to keep her aspect closed, leaving her much too stiff?(more)

Neeraj Pandeys Witty Writing Like A Wednesday & Special 26 Is Missed

Neeraj Pandeys Naam Shabana has an extremely weak screenplay. It is a remotely engaging plot and Pandey tries it least to enthuse with any dramatic dialogues. We miss the grit that Baby had laid in front of us. The film takes off very slow with Shabanas background being introduced to us. Everything till her recruitment in the agency is slightly boring. Also, it seems only unlikely as to why a top agent like Ranveer (Manoj Bajpayee) himself has to keep an eye on Shabana.(more)

Not Name Worthy

Director Shivam Nair gets a great opportunity to make a spin-off based on the character from the movie 'Baby'. Taapsee Pannu looks good and done some fantastic action in the movie. It's a proud moment for her, as it's for the first time that a spy film based on a female protagonist is made and that too at such a large scale. Manoj Bajpayee is fantastic in a couple of scenes. Akshay Kumar's cameo is highly appealing.(more)

Movie Review

The first half indulges the protagonist and her love interest, Jai too much. It is only post-intermission, especially the last 35 minutes in which proceedings pick up. Sticking to a typical-action drama narrative that jumps from Mumbai to Goa, Vienna to Kuala Lumpur, with the arms dealer and the ISI agents playing a cat-and-mouse game, the film, is more an escapist fare than a realistic one.(more)

Watch Naam Shabana for Taapsee Pannu

Naam Shabana is a sleek film, that unfolds at a wonderfully breakneck speed. It's crisp with no shoo-sha like my colleague Rajesh predicted. No wonder that Rajesh was trying to coax me to take him along for the press show. Mainly to drool over Taapsee, methinks. But to see some great conflict sequences from producer Neeraj Pandey, aided by director Shivam Nair, who might go on to become one of our best action filmmakers.(more)
