Movie Review

Director Sohail Khan, who shares writing credits too, takes a lot of cinematic liberties. Even in a Utopian state, it is hard to digest street children running amuck golf greens. Or having goondas, double up as caddies. Like they say, this happens only in our desi cinema.(more)

No genre is difficult for Nawazuddin Siddiqui and in this full length comic role he is a treat.

Sohail Khan has directed quite a few films now but there still seems to be no polishing to his work. I would give more credit to the person who cut out the trailer than Khan for directing the film. Freaky Ali turns out to be a disappointing affair quite early on. Khans direction seems to be very hotch potch and there is little to focus on in any of the scenes.(more)

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is the sole saving grace in this fractured sports entertainer!

we all love Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a performer, its high time that he chooses his projects more carefully, since this is the third film of his this year, after Te3N and Raman Raghav 2.0, that has let us down. Freaky Ali has a few moments of comic mirth that will make you crack a smile, but the film, overall, sputters and drags all the way to the final hole.(more)

More About Goofing Than Golf

The narration moves roughly and restlessly from one episode to another. The editing is abysmally patchy. The performances, barring Asif Basra as Ali's mentor and caddy, are uneven. Nawaz tries hard to appear casual in his golfing avatar. But the effort of embracing on-field elitism cracks open his self-worth. At best Nawaz's performance is mildly likeable. At worst, it is just plain uninspired.(more)

Freaky Ali inspired by the English film, Happy Gilmore, entertains with its simplicity and raw Indian appeal.

Loosely formulated as an inspirational film intended to cater to the masses, Freaky Ali is a hero's journey. Director Sohail Khan pulls all the plugs to give the film a mass appeal and that is why it probably works. Humour comes in the form of jokes, slapstick and situational comedy.(more)
