A fairly watchable thriller
Kathakali turns into a fairly watchable thriller. Two things help. One, the two-hour running time. Two, the focus. After a point, Meenukutty all but vanishes, leaving Amudhan free to find the killer before he is arrested for Thambas murder. Pandirajs earlier film, Pasanga 2, was a well-intentioned mess, but hes regained a bit of form here. At least, this looks like a piece of cinema. It's shot well. It moves briskly. There's a nice "mass"touch involving a selfie. Some thought has gone in. I know it doesnt sound like much, but we are at a stage with these star vehicles where "some thought has gone in" and "not bad" are active recommendations.(more)

Vishal's film is a good watch this Pongal
Director Pandiraj has delivered a thriller that is quite racy for the most part. As far as Vishal's role goes there are similarities with the roles he has essayed in some earlier films like Pandiyanadu. The actor has delivered a realistic performance in a role that shows a range of emotions from joy to sadness and anger. The actor seems to have mastered the angry young man role quite well now. The supporting cast has to be mentioned here as they all are a plus for the film(more)

Director Pandirajs excels, actor Vishal bores
A Vishal starrer has to have a larger-than-life character and a script that rolls beyond the frames of logic and reason, and much of what unfolds in Pandiraj-helmed Kathakali is well outside the realm of plausibility. The only redeeming feature of the work lies in its ability to hold on to the suspense element till the last frame, the thrill of the mysterious murderer keeping us riveted to scene after scene. Otherwise, much of Kathakali is pure mush, with the boy wooing the girl, and vowing to get her to the altar.(more)
