Emraan Hashmi plays a BRILLIANT knock in a totally one-sided match!

the film ultimately belongs to Emraan Hashmi. It is his sincere performance (even though his Hyderabadi accent go on and off as per the convenience of the script), that makes us invest in the film. Even though he doesnt look anything like the real Azhar, he makes sure he adopts a few mannerisms of the former cricket star, but not to the extent of mimicking him.(more)

Movie Review

Director Tony D'souza's AZHAR brilliantly captures the angst, the simplicity, the colossal success, the dual romance, tryst with infamy and an arduous innings of never ending struggle-to-clear-the-name of Indian cricket's heroic, yet arguably the most controversial captain Mohammad Azharuddin. Tony is stoically backed by the career best performance of Emraan Hashmi and excellent writing of Rajat Arora. (more)

Watch Azhar for him.

His desire to play a hundred tests remains a pipe dream because he is banned after his 99th nine. Without giving away too much, here one must add that the court-room drama with Reddy (Kunal) defending him and Meera (Lara) against him, is partly banal, partly an eye-opener. Emraan bears no physical resemblance to Azharruddin. However his mannerismsthe blinking of his eyes and swagger add to a knockout performance.(more)

Azhar is clearly made as an attempt at redemption for the tainted cricketer and India's ex-captain Mohammad Azharuddin.

Emraan plays it with so much sincerity that at times he is the only one who seems to make any sense in this forgettable movie. Full points to him for admirably aping the stylish gait that Azhar was popular for. Then there is Prachi Desai playing Azhar's jilted first wife Naureen. She looks beautiful and vulnerable as her character is expected to be. Nargis Fakhri, who plays Azhar's second wife actress Sangeeta Bijlani, makes no attempt at acting or whatsoever and walks through her part in a daze(more)

Real or fixed, Emraan Hashmi makes it interesting

The Emraan Hashmi charm mixed with shy Azharuddin mannerism makes it a heady cocktail. You wouldnt want to put it down without giving it a try.(more)

Bats on The Wet Pitch

The basic premise is good and the movie has been presented in engaging manner. But with the thin line script and bland screenplay followed by lack of intensity, 'Azhar' bats on a wet pitch with no hopes for recovery.(more)

The Emraan Hashmi starrer has been made to clear the real players name

This could have been a great cautionary tale about a great sport at a time when it was just becoming the arena it has grown intofull of big money and glamour, bigger endorsements and never-ending temptations : it is, instead, an inept tamasha, not very different from the stuff Bollywood churns out, the cricket just the superstructure for tired song-and-dance and melodrama, in living rooms and court-rooms.(more)
