Film that deserves to be seen for a problem that needs to be addressed!

The film definitely deserves to be seen for a problem very dangerous that needs to be addressed at the earliest. So go watch it in theaters and stand for the film, stand for its motive - Drugs Di Maa Di, stand for whats right! (more)

A brave story not many would have dared to tell

With his third film, Abhishek has pushed the boundaries of commercial cinema with his unique storytelling skills. He unfolds several layers of well crafted characters within the first half of the film. There is Tommy Singh, who is the youth icon of Punjab and a rock star known to make songs that revolves around the theme of drugs. However, one fine day his career comes crashing down and he goes on a self-discovery journey to find his true calling.(more)

Movie Review

Abhishek Chaubeys Punjab is completely different from what we have seen in YRF films. The sarso ke khet are much scarier now as drugs are being transported through them. The film takes off on the right foot as it explores the state of the youth, especially teenagers who have succumbed to substance abuse thanks to false idols like Tommy Singh.(more)

Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatts take on drug abuse in Punjab is a BRAVE attempt!

Abhishek Chaubey, Anurag Kashyap, and Ekta Kapoor for putting all their might in making this film. Another person who needs to be appreciated is Sudip Sharma for his crispy dialogues. Yes, there are cuss words in galore, but they add to the authenticity of the film. The first half of the film is tightly narrated and has some very brilliant scenes. The entire Tommy Singh arc (excluding a few sagging portions) is well-written, and so is Sartajs personal tragedy that becomes the fighting point for him. (more)

Chaubey uses a part-documentary-part-mainstream approach here. Post interval, the film is sometimes too indulgent and sluggish. Also this is not your sunny-side up cinema. It is stark and makes you cringe. However, its victory lies in making you empathise with its characters. As Alia and Shahid, both victims of drug and physical abuse fight their demons and destinies, you shed a silent tear. Shahid has got his act pat but Alia beats everyone hollow. Kareena and Diljit are adept. This review also doffs a hat to the nuanced performances of Satish Kaushik, Prabhjyot Singh and Manav Vij. (more)

Udta Punjab is a stunning film

t Udta Punjab truly soars when being its own madcap beast, profane and powerful and preening. Oh, and a word about that music: Woof. Amit Trivedi is a master, Chaubey has a gift for placing music and adding context to moments, and the decision to use Shiv Kumar Batalvi's dazzling poem Ikk Kudi as a literal part of the narrative is a marvellous one. Naturally, this call -- like that of sculpting his idiocy across the side of his own head -- is made by the mad musician. Good on you, Tommy. Rock a doodle doo.(more)
