Stilted story telling that barely engages

Rang Rasiya, Ketan Mehta's biopic on one of India's most famous painter Raja Ravi Varma, is colourful, passionate and mounted large. Yet despite some good performances the film doesn't really grip you the way it could have. Some tighter story telling would have benefited this film immensely. It is a good attempt that does not fall into the skin show titillation in the name of art genre. Yet it is not something that would be remembered for long either.(more)

Right palette, wrong brush.

There's also no part in which Hooda looks like he isn't acting or striving for inspiration. Most essential offshoots appear as mere footnotes; his loyal brother, estranged wife, jealous kings, his famous printing press-all unfortunate victims on the edit table. (more)

Rang Rasiya is more courageous than bold, more sensitive in its narrative than preachy or aggressive and more relevant than any one of his recent films

The vision of the film is definitely not for the myopic. It expects you to widen the parameters of your thought process and transports you into a world linked inextricably with our history and culture. The films first half is a little slow, and might even drag in places but for most part, even its relatively weaker first half is building towards its heartbreaking, yet beautiful climax.(more)

Rang Rasiya, an important story that needed to be told.

Rang Rasiya depicts painter Raja Ravi Varma's passion towards art and also takes a closer look at the method behind the madness. The film is based on writer Ranjit Desai's biographical novel Raja Ravi Varma, whose art knew no boundaries. Rang Rasiya is not a perfect film and not for everyone but for those who would like to know more about one of the best painters ever, this one will be worth your time.(more)
