A warm heart, little else

iku leaves you with a smile, wanting for something more. One wishes it had a little more meat, a little more heft to it. As it is now though it is a nice small breath of fresh air. Go watch it for sure. What is missing though in the film is the fact that it takes all the good things going for it for granted refusing to make an effort to dissecting insights and fleshing out the unsaid. There is a lovely story untold between Deepika and Irrfan's characters, an angle criminally unexplored, especially on the road trip they take together to Kolkata. We have the warmth and charm of an old city crumbling at its seams, yet haven't we already seen Kolkata enough on screen by now? (more)

Piku is an absolute must watch.

A warm, charming and bittersweet family drama, Piku turns the genre completely on its head. The result is a magnificently original film that delivers a memorably unique movie experience. Coming from the man who crafted Vicky Donor, a quaint drama around the adventures of a sperm donor, and got away with it, this comedy about constipation is par for the course. What is truly surprising, and impressive, is that director Shoojit Sircar puts just enough spin on this wild whimsy to keep it whirling engagingly over its running time of two hours and a bit. He is aided, of course, by a remarkable cast of actors who plunge headlong, and with full conviction, into the film. Piku gives the go-by to the usual trappings of Hindi cinema and offers a fresh and deliciously quirky take on a deeply layered father-daughter relationship that borders on the dysfunctional.(more)

Pushing for potty perfection

The only problem with Piku was that it ended. Yet it ended just like the rest of the film - in perfection Piku is a rare gem of a film. It deals with two of our nation's favourite topics - family and bowel movements. It gives an inside peek into a moment in the life of a Bengali family living in CR park in Delhi. The moment happens to be a journey. The family comprises of a beautiful, successful, stressed urban daughter, her hypochondriac, ageing father and their loyal servant. The only problem with Piku was that it ended. Yet it ended just like the rest of the film - in perfection. You felt full, satiated and still willing to squeeze in one more delicious bite if offered. I can't think of a reason to take even half a star away. 5 stars. Just go see it now. And take me along again and again. (more)

Don't miss this gentle rollercoaster ride. Piku's motions and emotions must be enjoyed.

The direction's brilliant. Deft, yet deep, Shoojit Sircar presents characters so ordinary, they're wonderful, people and places intimately intertwined, an aunt pickled in resentment, boats almost painted on a sheet-like Ganga. With passion, there's precision too, the editing fish-bone sharp, detailing, down to Bhaskor's monkey cap, perfect. Some moments evoke Ang Lee's terrific 'Eat Drink Man Woman'. Others evoke your and my life. Together, Piku makes you shake with laughter. It also makes your heart cry. (more)

It is difficult to find faults in Piku. Must Watch.

Simplicity drives this story that is so real that you relate to from its very first frame. One of the finest representations of familial bonds on screen. MUST WATCH!! It is a rare thing to find directors like Shoojit Sircar who truly understand how strongly a medium like cinema works when you want to emote something so natural.(more)

This is a film that shall grow with word of mouth.

Since it's a simple film, the music of the film is also expected to be simple. And the film's music director Anupam Roy delivers just that. Even though there are not any chartbusting tracks in the film, the music of the film helps as a major driving force in the film's progress. While the film's cinematography (Kamaljeet Negi) is beautiful, the film's editing (Chandrashekhar Prajapati) is crisp. A special mention to the film's costume designer (Veera Kapur) for keeping the costumes 'in check' with the 'flow' of the film. On the whole, PIKU is a must watch this season as it brings back the memories of the legendary directors Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Chatterjee and likes. (more)

This Amitabh, Deepika film has both motion and emotion.

An emotionally rich and endearing film, Piku is a heart-warming experience that every Indian who has lived with ailing or ageing parent will connect to. Independent women who juggle their professional and personal lives with domestic responsibilities are likely to identify more with it. Piku offers no masala or romantic escapades but neither does it bog you down with preachy monologues and gyan on how kids should be responsible towards their parents. This is the kind of entertainers Bollywood should aim at.(more)
