Subhash Ghai's film makes you cringe and laugh at the same time

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, Subhash Ghai's films would guarantee a huge opening. They would be quintessential masala potboilers, high on Indian values, where the heroine would be the pure virginal beauty and the hero would be a dutiful son or someone wronged by the society. Kaanchi lacks Subhash Ghai's magical touch

This is Subhash Ghai mining his usual patriotic this is my India self

A fiery young girl from the hills takes up cudgels on behalf of her people and fights off the bad guys. This is the burden of Subhash Ghais new film, and he tells it in the same manner that made his films so watchable in the 80s, and so outdated in 2014.(more)

Kaanchi, he too is obsessed with keeping his town in the hills safe

Kaanchi (Mishti Mukherjee) is a virginal beauty from Koshampa in Uttaranchal who gets into brawls with the local bullies. And yet, there is an innocence about her that is alluring. We're told that her late father, an army man, is whom she has got her spirited nature from. Of course, her homemaker ma admonishes her and tells her that girls shouldn't behave like goondas. But Kaanchi, who is also called 'Sigdi' (a hot stove) doesn't subscribe to her mom's views. Her lover Binda (Karthik Aaryan) is the local fitness consultant who trains the neighbourhood in combat. Like Kaanchi, he too is obsessed with keeping his town in the hills safe.(more)

Subhash Ghai lacks showmanship

`Kaanchi` does not work on any front. Watch the movie at your own risk. But spare a thought for Ghai - it breaks your heart to see a showman fail to produce a good show.(more)
