Abcd 2 Music Review - "Festive yet emotional"

Anup Pandey

Music: Sachin-Jigar

Lyrics: Mayur Puri, Priya Saraiya, D Soldierz, Rimi Nique, Badshah

1. Bezuban Phir Se

A rehash of the most popular track from the first part. The duo tries to make it sound more badass and angsty with Vishal Dadlani's rap. There's also an ode to A R Rahman's Dance anthem from Taal with that whistle bit.

2. Naach Meri Jaan

This track adds the outlandish sound of the album. Its carnivalesque arrangement keeps up the energy and mood.

3. Sun Saathiya

The tune and Priya Saraiya's singing is very likeable. It is led by superlative and immersive arrangement... particularly in the interlude (look out for the piano followed by tabla). But it rushes to keep up to the dance pace of the album. I would have loved it more had it been a slow-burner.

4. Vande Mataram

Vande Mataram is a culmination of the street culture of Bombay: the street dance (about which the film is) and rap music, its raw emotions that finds voice in patriotism in this one. The track has some sort of storytelling to it which will be clear only when we see it in the film. Till then it's good to hear an emotional Daler Mehndi and Tanishka Saraiya (who debuted in the duo's Coke Studio episode).

5. Chunar

Derived from Gujrati folk, the song is rendered with haunting and emotionally charged arrangement and an equally soulful Arijit Singh. The guitar just after the prelude is particularly gorgeous.

6. Happy Birthday

It's refreshing to see Sachin-Jigar doing fun, party tracks with equal ease and not getting trite in the process. This one is on the lines of their last such fun number: Johnny Johnny from Entertainment. The quirky bit comes from that "awww" hook and "jor se bolo Happy Birthday" as they do in jagraatas.

7. Happy Hour

Though the title and the singer (Mika Singh) suggests again a regular party number, it is again not what we hear regularly. Though starts with an EDM bit followed by a beep-bot, we enter a Vishal Bharwaj-ish atmosphere. It also does remind me Rahman's Kya Kare Kya Na Kare from Rangeela.

8. If You Hold My Hand

A breezy, peppy western track that stays very much in the comfort zone of Benny Dayal. In its short length of 3 minutes and a half, it isn't boring but not even catchy enough.

9. Hey Ganaraya

The Ganpati song in the first part was made out to be a electronic led dance number. This one, very Ajay-Atul'ish in its treatment, is traditionally classical.

10. Tatto

There are few good experimentations in its interludes and in the overall arrangement. But collectively, it is a bit on the noisier side and tad repetitive.

Bottomline:

For a soundtrack that isn't essentially meant for listening but for visualising with those exquisite dance moves, Sachin-Jigar deliver one that is identifiable with the genre and its festive spirit.
