Daawat-E-Ishq Movie Review - Mouthwatering Biryani sans flavor

Anant Vernerkar

Story

A heart-broken Hyderabadi girl – Gulrez’s ruthless plot to swindle a potential dowry seeking groom to fulfil her American dream

Plot

The movie revolves around three main characters viz. Gulrez Qadir (Parineeti Chopra), Tariq Haider (Aditya Roy Kapoor) and Mr. Qadir (Anupam Kher). Karan Wahi has a brief role as Gulrez’s boyfriend.

Gulrez is an academically brilliant working girl. Being a shoe designer, she takes up a job of saleswoman in a leading shoe shop. Mr. Qadir is Gulrez’s father who works as a Senior Clerk in Andhra Pradesh High Court.

On the look-out for her Mr. Universe, Gulrez finds him in Karan Wahi who chickens out to the pressure of dowry demanded by his parents. The bitterness generated by this break-up and a TV news on a wife successfully winning 10 Crores as alimony from her husband under Section 498a Dowry Harassment case, she decides to similarly swindle a rich dowry seeking groom to fund her dreams to go to America for higher education and better future. She is supported by her father who after meeting with a minor road accident realizes he has only 2 years due for retirement and now concerned for his daughter’s future. They decide to leave Hyderabad and hunt for their prey in Lucknow. With fake passports and Rs.15 lacs already saved for dowry, they fund this con project.

Tariq Haider is one of the shortlisted rich grooms termed as “bakraa”. He is the owner-cum-cook of Haideri Kabab Pvt. Ltd., a reputed eatery in Lucknow which is overflowing with customers including foreigners. During the screening process the Dad-Daughter duo pin down Tariq Haider as the best bet and then begins the drama.

Bottomline

‘Yash Raj films’ is a big budget trusted brand providing you no-nonsense and reasonable romantic entertainment. Except for the flawless performances of Aditya Roy Kapur, Parineeti Chopra and Anupam Kher, the movie does not offer you anything interesting. The climax though predictable is abrupt, flat and leaves no impact.  The movie highlights the serious and rampant dowry issue but the comical representation and weak plot fails to deliver a strong anti-dowry message.  The songs and lyrics are brilliant and adds bit of a flavor to the movie but overall it is a one-time watch only if you are a fan of Aditya Roy Kapur and Parineeti Chopra.
