Money And Arrogance Did Not Win: Samuthirakani On Vijay's Victory And The Losses That Hurt

PUBLISHED DATE | 26/May/2026

Actor and director Samuthirakani has weighed in on Vijay's landslide assembly election victory, offering both praise and a touch of bittersweet reflection in a recent press interaction.

Addressing criticism of Vijay's political inexperience head-on, Samuthirakani said the people of Tamil Nadu had made their choice and he trusted that someone new to politics would govern with greater care and goodness. "All those who had the knowledge, what did they do for the people?" he asked pointedly. Comparing the results to a tsunami, he added that money, caste, religion, and arrogance all failed at the ballot box, while the voters proved far more discerning than politicians had given them credit for.

However, Samuthirakani did not hold back his sadness over some of the election's other outcomes. The defeats of MK Stalin, PTR, and Seeman weighed on him, as did the fact that Thirumavalavan did not get to contest. He also expressed that Annamalai deserved a longer run in the electoral arena. "The tsunami took away some good things as well," he said.

Samuthirakani is currently filming Arasan, directed by Vetri Maaran and headlined by Silambarasan and Vijay Sethupathi, reprising his role as Guna from the Vada Chennai universe.
