The current executive body of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), consists of 17 members who were elected just two months ago in 2024. This 17-member AMMA executive committee, who were to serve between 2024-2027, have stepped down as a whole, following the Hema Committee - #MeToo apocalypse, that has taken over the Malayalam film industry.
Actor Mohanlal who has been serving as the president of AMMA for three consecutive years now, has stepped down alongside actor Unni Mukundan (treasurer), and other executive members including actors Kalabhavan Shajon, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Joy Mathew, Suresh Krishna, Tini Tom, Ananya, Vinu Mohan, Tovino Thomas, Sarayu Mohan, and Anseeba.
"In light of the Hema Committee report addressing sexual harassment allegations against certain AMMA office-bearers, the current governing body of AMMA is resigning to uphold its moral responsibility. A general meeting will be convened within two months to elect a new governing body," - Official statement from AMMA
AMMA general secretary and senior actor Siddique was the first one to step down, following the reiteration of sexual allegations by junior artiste Revathy Sampath. Revathy first made her claims in 2019, but it got more attention following the release of the Hema Committee report to the public.
"He (Siddique) is a criminal. He subjected me to sexual assault for an hour. He asked me to come to Hotel Mascot (in 2016 when Revathy Sampath was 21) to discuss a film offer. I was caught unaware when he asked me immediately whether I was ready for adjustments. When I expressed shock, he became explicit in his demands saying that his sexual fantasies include women with long nails"
- Revathy Sampath told the press following the release of the Hema Committee report in August 2024.
AMMA joint secretary Baburaj too faces allegations of sexual harassment from a junior artist. Choosing to remain anonymous, this junior artist who has since left the Malayalam film industry, alleged in her statement to the media that Baburaj offered her a role in a movie in 2019, and invited her to his house in Aluva, stating that the film’s crew would be present there. Upon arrival, she claimed that she found herself alone with him, and that she was assaulted by Baburaj.
Actor Joy Mathew has told The Hindu that the existing committee will continue as an ad hoc arrangement to ensure that AMMA’s welfare measures for its members are not disrupted. Previously AMMA had reacted to the Hema Committee reporting by putting out a statement, "Thanks for criticizing and correcting,"
