Vaazha - Biopic of a Billion Boys is a coming of age comedy drama starring a bunch of new actors - Siju Sunny, Amith Mohan Rajeswari, Joemon Jyothir, Anuraj OB, Anuraj OB. Story, screenplay and dialogues are written by Vipin Das and the film is directed by Anand Menon.
Premise:
Vaazha is a film about the life of five friends. Portrays about the people they meet, carefree school and college times, their equation with their parents, humiliations they face in public and at last how they grew up to be.
Writing/ Direction:
Slightly resembles Love Today (2022), yet the idea of showing the growth of a banana plant during the title credits for timeline transition is fascinating. The writing is solid in almost all the aspects, offering a fulfilling experience by covering many slices of life. So there is an instant connection which continues to stay till the very end. It doesn’t touch everything just for the sake of it, immense depth for all the characters and situations they go through is what makes the film special. The friendship angle is super strong, their bonding of being there for each other is amusing, their travel from childhood is shown in a perfect manner. The small moments are clap-worthy, montages are beautiful that constantly puts a smile on our face, more importantly there is a sense of freshness to everything. Basil Joseph has done a cameo and the character breaks a stereotype that conveys an important message. Not just the boys, their parents’ characterizations are so powerfully penned and the women in the movie make a mighty mark. Flipside, the film doesn’t take itself seriously, even a suicide attempt scene is turned into a joke. And, that’s why the emotional values in the pre-climax did not land as impactful as they could have.
Performances:
New artists have performed brilliantly, rather they have lived their roles by being extremely rooted. Pitch perfect casting, the fathers and son resemble a lot in terms of facial features. All other supporting characters are natural on-screen.
Technicalities:
Director has a unique vision and he has achieved it comfortably by extracting great work from the technical department. Delightful songs that keep up the energy of the flow, the montages elevate the music in a splendid fashion. Lovely background score as well, fun-filled during the jolly scenes and soulful when the situation becomes serious towards the end. New-age stylish editing, proves the craftsman’s mettle with innovative cut-patterns throughout. Stunt choreography is first class, realistic treatment and still provides that cinematic punch.
Bottomline
Some minor flaws here and there, of the emotions falling flat and the ending being incomplete. It is an out and out fun ride that is filled with hilarious moments, gets most things right.
