The south Indian film industries (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam) had decided not to release new films from March 1 in protest against the charges levied by Digital Service Providers such as Qube and UFO.

We had come up with detailed write-up on the impact caused by this indefinite strike especially to Theatre Owners who are not part of this shutdown proposed by Producers Council. (Read Dull March Ahead for Kollywood)

No new releases – Theatre owners have re-released popular films like Vijay’s Mersal, Ajith’s Vedhalam and Vijay Sethupathi’s Vikram Vedha as a backup for non-release of films. This way they could attract some crowd to the theatres.

Slash in Ticket Price – To keep the business going, theatres have also reduced the ticket prices. Popular multiplex Abirami Theatres has reportedly reduced the ticket cost.

Strike status - Talks are on between the digital service providers (DSPs) and the exhibitors, a final conclusion is yet to be made.
