Sarkar 3 Review - Great RGV films are days of the past!

In 2005, ‘Sarkar’, a film based on the Mario Puzo’s Godfather, adapted brilliantly into the Maharashtra political scenario stormed the entire nation with its ruthless execution. It’s sequel Sarkar Raj was not that impressive but didn’t disappoint either. But now, the final part in the trilogy lacks everything that engages a viewer. Yes, Sarkar 3 is a very big letdown compared to the expectations around the film. Even Mr. Bachchan couldn’t save it!

The film opens with Sarkar’s (Bachchan) speech about principles which makes us believe that he is still leading the Maharashtra political scene even after losing his two sons. He now has a trusted deputy in Gokul (Ronit Roy) who takes care of his affairs. His grandson Shivaji (Amit Sadh) is back and is working towards being a suitable successor for Sarkar. Things start to go wrong when a business deal falls off grid, Shivaji falls in love with Anu (Yami Gautam) who wants to avenge her father’s death who was killed by Sarkar and the Mafia from Dubai ‘Vallya’ (Jackie Shroff) is after Sarkar’s life.

The film is nothing but a shoddy work of writing. There are no new elements and the story and twists are largely copied from the first two parts. A stronger screenplay and a better adaptation into Maharashtra political scene could have worked wonders for the movie with an amazing cast. Those magical RGV days seem to be a past now!

Apart from the script, the camera angles were also not visually appealing but distracting. The background score was too heavy and the constant chant of Govinda Govinda is irritating after a point.

Talking about the performances, Amitabh Bachchan is rock solid as Sarkar and proves again why he’s still the best. Jackie Shroff is average and so is Amit Sadh not being able to make his presence felt. Yami Gautam is decent when it comes to cold looks but apart from that she has nothing much to do it in the film. Ronit Roy stays in his comfort zone but makes a respectable impact. One major disappoint is the screen time given to Manoj Bajpayee. He was ecstatic is his performance but just like this review, his mention is limited.

Bottom line:

In all, skip the film if you want to remain with the happy memories of Sarkar series. If you want to watch Amitabh Bachchan at his best, watch the film on dvd.
