Kirumi Review - A Neat Little Tense Drama

Bharath Vijayakumar

Plot: A jobless youngster gets an opportunity to be an informer and he grabs it with both hands. Eager to move up the ladder he inquisitively does a few things, little realizing that not everything is what it seems in this police - underworld nexus.

Cast:

Kathir who made a mark in Madha Yaanai Kootam is impressive as the leading man. He is able as the hot headed individual who later gets guilt ridden and comes to terms with reality. His atypical filmy hero looks is also a clincher for the role. Why do we see so less of Charlie on the big screen? Luckily he seems to be doing more films these days and Kirumi reiterates what an accomplished actor he is. Every actor in the film looks the part and are absolutely measured in his/her performance.

Crew:

The mood of the film is quite evident from the first frame. K's music and Arul Vincent' cinematography help maintain the tense ambience right through the film.

Direction:

Anucharan makes an assured debut. There is a strong authority over the medium and this is evident in every scene. This is another film which is about it's protagonist who is not a hero. Tamil cinema really seems to be moving away from the ideal man concept. Kathir is shown as someone who would exploit someone to further his needs. An early scene suggests that he would not mind physical intimacy given a chance with a girl whom we assume to be his girl friend. Only a few scenes later do we realize that he is already married and has a beautiful wife. The characters in Kirumi stand out. Kathir and his family, Charlie and his wife, the two warring inspectors - each one of them and the actors who play these parts stand out. The film shows that running away from needless trouble and to forgo revenge is not always cowardice. While there is no let up on the realistic treatment, Kirumi never loses grip over what a film is supposed to do. It engages you for the entire 104 minutes. Yes you read it right. This is another film that runs under 2 hours.

Bottomline:

Kirumi is an assured debut from debutant Anucharan and is a very well made film.
