if Ajith had replaced Vijay in Murugadoss' Kathi...

If Ajith had acted in Murugadoss' Kathi

For the uninitiated, it is well know that Kaththi was written by AR Murugadoss with Ajith in mind to play the lead characters. A few days before signing the dotted lines, Ajith and AR Murugadoss parted ways with both not willing to drop their remuneration to make the project economically viable for Ayngaran. Murugadoss immediately approached Vijay who grabbed the opportunity before thinking twice.

With Vijay and A.R. Murugadoss' Kaththi turning out to be a massive grosser worldwide, it is only natural to
do some post-mortem on how the movie would have shaped up if Ajith had played the lead roles of Jeevanandam and Kathiresan. Without taking even an ounce of credit away from Vijay's brilliant performance, here are a few reasons why Ajith in Kaththi would have been sharper.

Ajith fighting for a common man

Vijay has fought for poors in a dime a dozen movies in the past. In contrast, Ajith is better known for his gangster theme and the movies where he played shades of gray. The last time Ajith acted in a social-political theme movie was "Citizen". It would have been a welcome change to see Ajith in a well-made hard-hitting movie fighting for the poor farmers. Be it Kathiresan's press-meet scene, Jeevanandam quest for finding water in the village or even those over-the-top fight sequences beating up a truck-load of goons single-handedly.

Ajith's Brand Image

Ajith's brand image of not overtly pandering to media or corporate would have worked big time for the movie. Ajith does not endorse any soft-drink products or act in advertisements. However, Vijay has been a Coke brand ambassador and continue to endorse commercial products. This has resulted in a number of social media memes going viral questioning Vijay's double standards. No such arguments could have been possibly made if it had been Ajith.

In Summary, this is not the first time a big star has missed a movie after coming close to signing. And it will not be the last time either. However tempting it is to dwell on what shoulda, coulda or woulda happened if Ajith had done Kaththi, Vijay completely deserves this success for bringing his own trademark commercial elements and making a heavy subject entertaining to ensure box-office success.
