Vairamuthu - Aandal Controversy : Bharathi Raja, Seenu Ramasamy, M.K. Stalin support, Aandal devotees oppose

TL;DR Famed Poet cum Tamil Lyricist Kaviperarasu Vairamuthu found himself the target of BJP's H. Raja (the same person responsible for the Mersal - GST hullabaloo), when Vairamuthu delivered a speech on Andal at the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple and said that she belonged to the Devadasi (an ancient religious system in which a girl was married to the temple deity and regarded as temple property thereon) community. After Raja's attack on what Vairamuthu said as "poisonous", both Vairamuthu and the daily that carried his statements on Aandal have issued a public apology for the same.

Vairamuthu's Apology (Translated From Tamil)

“In my article of Tamizhai Andal, I quoted a line in a study by Indiana University. It is not my opinion. It is the researcher’s argument. The purpose of literature is to highlight the greatness of personalities and not to diminish it. Everybody knows that the views I’ve expressed about Andal talk only about her greatness..It is not my intention to hurt anyone’s sentiments, if it did, I regret it.”

The Tamil film fraternity has come out in support of the Vairamuthu and celebrities like directors Bharathi Raja and Seenu Ramasamy have slammed Raja and issued their support for the famed lyricist.

Bharathi Raja (pointing to H Raja)

“Can you create literature for Tamils like Vairamuthu has? Can you even write one song that wakes up tired people? Don't think of destroying such a renowned Tamilian...Vairamuthu lives a guiding light to the life of many people. How can you speak of him without a nerve in your tongue?”

Seenu Ramasamy

"Andal knows what Vairamuthu said so she will agree as she knows Tamil. H Raja, who doesn't read Tamil, should apologize to 90-year-old mother Angammal (Vairamuthu's mother), who is in Vadugapatti (Vairamuthu's birth-place), for speaking against the senior poet of Tamil society as if he is an orphan."

Vairamuthu also received a vote of support from DMK leader M.K. Stalin who condemned the threats against the lyricist and said that "people are trying to instigate violence in Tamil Nadu in the name of protectors of Hindu religion and are talking about Vairamuthu out of their need for self-gain and publicity"

Despite the clarifications and the in-flow of support, Vairamuthu continues to face back-lash as recently, a pro-Hindu outfit conducted protests at Trichy demanding the "deportation of Vairamuthu from the country". The rally was conducted on January 12, 2018 and was attended by senior priests of the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple at Srirangam.
