Vijay's Thuppaki takes a "Beerangi" opening
Thuppakki takes a thunderous opening in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and other international markets. It is expected to get better in the coming days as the movie carries excellent word of mouth. What is special about Thuppakki (when compared to Vijay's Pokkiri or Nanban) is that fans did not know what to expect from the movie when they walked in. This resulted in excellent word of mouth among fans, critics and neutral audience. Expect Thuppakki to set a new benchmark in Vijay's career.
Tamil Nadu and Chennai Mutliplexes
Thuppakki has managed to get a great opening at Tamil Box Office and doing well in almost all of the single screens all over Tamil Nadu. As expected, the film has comfortably whizzed past other Diwali releases in Tamil and Hindi. Thuppakki has managed to create a storm also in the multiplexes. For instance, Sathyam cinemas in Chennai do not have special shows on weekdays so far. On Wednesday, they have 19 special shows in the morning (starting 7-9am). The additional shows were added Monday night and the tickets got sold-off promptly.
We had also reported earlier that AGS and Gemini were locking horns over Thuppakki release in AGS screens (Villivakam, OMR Navalur, etc.). As of today, all issues between Gemini/Aascar and AGS were resolved a few hours before the first show on Tuesday. Thuppakki is running in all planned screens successfully with issues in Coimbatore and other centres reaching a mutual agreement.
Kerala
A new record has been set in Kerala box office. With Thuppakki releasing in 124 screens in Kerala, Thuppaki's grand opening is expected to surpass all other Malayalam and regional movies released in the state of Kerala till date. It is reported that the fans were queued up since 3.00 PM on Monday for the first show screened at 1.00 AM.
USA
Thuppakki opened big with premieres in 40 locations across USA. AR Murugadoss' first outing with Vijay had huge expectations among fans. There had been some concerns when the date got pushed out since US audience do not go out for movies during week days. Due to the usual delays in print arrivals and keys for digital prints, the preview show times were updated only last minute. In spite of these challenges and Monday evening premiere, most locations had good turnout on Monday and better occupancy levels on Tuesday. The word of mouth is great for the movie and ATMUS Entertainment, the distributor believes this will turn out to be the first big movie to be a blockbuster in 2012. In spite of date getting pushed from 9th (a weekend) to 13th, ATMUS still managed to release it in 52 screens with 40 premieres.
