Interview With

Nelson

Nayanthara starrer Kolamavu Kokila is all set to release tomorrow, the 17th August and director Nelson took time off from his busy promotional meets to speak to Jyothsna Bhavanishankar on this much awaited film whose trailer and songs are a great hit already.

The expectations for Kolamavu Kokila are tremendous. How do you feel?

I am happy as well as little nervous. I am curious to know how the audiences are going to receive this as it is a quirky, out of the box premise. We are happy that the film has turned out to be how we wanted.

When you wrote the story, did you have Nayanthara in mind?

No! I did not have anyone in mind for the character and wrote a general story. But once I wrote, I felt Nayanthara would be suitable in terms of star value and performance.

How did she come into the film?

I know Nayanthara for more than a decade. So it was not difficult to reach her. When I told her that I have a story to narrate, she gave me time. She liked the story, gave her nod and asked me to firm up other things.

What about Yogi Babu? Did he come in later?

No! I fixed the three characters of Yogi Babu, Saranya Ponvannan and Natraj and then only wrote the story. Once I completed the story, I approached them; they also liked it and came on board.

What kind of a movie is Kolamavu Kokila?

It will have all kinds of emotions; there will be crime; it will be a thriller and it will have humor and sentiments too. Perhaps, you can call it a crime thriller comedy. You will find all those elements which are needed for a general cinema. It is a new thought and it would be refreshing for the audience. We have avoided aspects of a regular cinema. It was also a new experience for us. I am sure Kolamavu Kokila would be entertaining. We started it as a small film but slowly it became big. Expectations are high now.

How did you bring in two most popular people, Sivakarthikeyan and Vignesh Shivn to write lyrics for the songs?

I know Sivakarthikeyan for a long time. For Kalyana Vayasu song, I knew Sivakarthikeyan was apt because he is good in that kind of style and thought. When we approached him, he was fine with it. We played the tune and he gave us the lines.

Vignesh Shivn is a close friend of mine and I know him for more than 10 years. He is also Anirudh's friend. I generally look out first in my friends circle and then only seek outside. Vikki has written lyrics for many songs and this is not something new for him.

Anirudh's music is one of the major high points of the film. Can you elaborate on it?

Anirudh is the hero of my film. He has been the strength of Kolamavu Kokila from the start. He liked the content and has been very keen that the film should turn out good. He had put in a lot of extra effort and worked for the film. He was focused to deliver an out of the box music within the confines of a commercial entertainer. Initially, there were only two songs but Anirudh felt there should be more and now we have six songs in the film. To that extent, he was interested in the project. Kalyana Vayasu is a big hit and the other songs will be liked when you see them in the movie.

Contribution from the supporting cast

Paruthi Veeran Saravanan sir has done the role of an inspector with a lot of subtlety. He will be a cool inspector. Saranya ma'am has done a mom's role, someone from a struggling family. Jacqueline plays Nayanthara's sister and RS Sivaji plays Nayan's dad. Everybody has an interesting role. Yogi Babu, Natarajan sir and Hareesh Peradi have done a superb job. There are around 12 key characters in the film around which the film revolves. There will be a convincing culmination for the all the characters.

Would you revive Vettai Mannan?

I don't have clarity on that. Simbu sir and the production team should decide. I don't have control on it.

Have you readied your next script?

No, not yet! I am waiting for the response of Kolamavu Kokila. If I get an interesting core idea, I would pursue.

All the best Nelson!
