If there is one thing that has created as much attention as the festival of Diwali this year, then it is the much-in-the-news Vijay starrer Mersal. The film which is due to hit theatre screens during the holiday weekend, understandably had its makers on their toes. Catching up with the lady of the hour, producer Hema Rukmani (of Sri Thenandal Films) on one such busy evening, we were able to squeeze in these quick questions :

Right from its inception, Mersal has had stills leaked from the sets, then there was this whole legal battle for the title and then there was a supposed-story leak. On a producer, does it eventually take a toll?

Problems like these are definitely unsavoury as no producer wants to face such situations. But one has to go with the flow and be ready to handle whatever comes your way. As far as the story leak is concerned, it is not what is there in the movie; so we are pretty at ease with it. And we have our title back and are more than glad about it. Looking forward to a Mersal Diwali this year.

Mersal is being dubbed in Telugu, Hindi and quite a few non-Tamil languages. What do you have to say about a certain section of the audience being apprehensive about the other-language acceptance of the film / lead actor?

People are entitled to their own opinion. I don't know what your sources of non-acceptance are but we have mostly received positive reactions and support from the audience in general. Moreover, when theatre owners and distributors are willing to invest money in buying and show-casing the film,(then) I don't see any harm in having a multilingual release. Also, Mersal's result (upon release) will speak for itself about the film's and Vijay sir's reach.

More than anyone else, you must know how Mersal has turned out. What is your expectation from the film?

Every producer is the first fan of their own film. He / She would want it to be entertaining; a producer invests lakhs and lakhs of money in a project and at the end of the day, they want it to be a success. Not only for Mersal, but I wish this for every film of mine as they are all my favourites.

After Mersal, all eyes are on TSL's next big project Sangamithra. Tell us a little bit about it..

Sangamithra is very much on track and we are very happy to be associated in creating such an ambitious project. It should begin in about a month's time and we are very confident about the film. Will be making an announcement soon on it.

What was your mindset during the theatre shut-down and no-movie release phase that Kollywood endured during the strike against double taxation?

It has not been a happy thing to undergo. We had a film as big as Mersal at hand and to see an inconclusive battle was deterrent and unsettling. However, when we are working together as a team (Mersal team), you have to keep going ahead and hope for the best. Even with the title issue, we were very much in focus with our goal and never once did we loose it.

Mersal's marketing techniques are being raved for being unique and effective. Was there a particular strategy that worked?

Of course Mersal was special to us as it was our (Sri Thenandal Film's) 100th film. We tried to make our fans as happy as possible. Vijay Sir has this connect with the masses that we worked on, using the slow interactive marketing technique. Personally I am a Vijay fan and I could see myself reacting to every bit of it. It was a win-win for both us and the audience. interactive marketing is a one-to-one marketing strategy that reacts and changes based on the actions of the individuals consuming (and interacting with) your content (In this case the audience and fans of Vijay and Mersal).

Before it got too late, we quickly asked her to share a few words about her and people's favourite Thalapathy Vijay and this is what she had to say

"As everyone knows, Vijay sir is a humble, sweet person and extremely down-to-earth. On screen he is a wonderful actor with a charming persona and you would get to witness that in Mersal as well. This year, it is going to be a Mersal Diwali not only for Vijay sir's fans but for all of us."
