What went down in the Parvathy - Kasaba - Mammootty controversy

With regards to the above video, actress Parvathy during a panel discussion at the International Film Festival of Kerala, shared her thoughts on how a woman is used in films and happened to make the following statements : “I don’t want to say name of the film,” (then on the insistence of filmmaker Geetu Mohandas, Parvathy continued.. “I, unfortunately, watched Kasaba. With all due respects to the technicians who worked in the film. I was definitely disappointed to watch an actor (Mammootty) par excellence, happen to say dialogues to a woman in a scene which was not only derogatory but most saddening.”

Their discussion expecially Parvathy's statements courted controversy and both the women involved have been subject to constant trolling by Mammootty's loyals that included fans, film personalities and the director and producer of Kasaba. Here is a quick look at who said what :

Nithin Renji Panicker  (Director of Kasaba) :

“There is no need to discuss a movie that was released a year ago. It is quite evident to all that this is merely a publicity stunt hoping to garner fame. Like a majority of people, I too believe that the actress’ criticism is not worthy of a response...Besides, I do not think that this actress is worthy of a retort from my end.”

Joby George (Producer of Kasaba) :

“If Geethu aunty and Parvathy aunty tell me the dates of their birthday, I will show Kasaba in full house as my birthday gift.”

Santhosh Pandit (Malayalam Actor)
  • A popular actress had commented at an ongoing popular film festival that a few dialogues mouthed by a popular actor in a popular movie was misogynistic in fact the majority of movies that are released here are written, directed and produced by mostly men, so they would obviously portray women in their movies the way they like to perceive them.

  • The primary aim of those who make either an award movie or a commercial movie is to do good business and gain profit; and definitely not to positively elevate the society. If the women are disappointed at the present situation then there is only one way to change it. Women should forget about business and marketing aspects of movies, and direct and produce films in which fully clothed female actors are made to mouth decent dialogues.

  • Either women should learn about the technical aspects of movie making even if they quit acting after marriage and make movies which are 100% decent, without actually being concerned about business or should vow that they wouldn’t act in those movies which portray women in obscene ways (like shower scene, exposing, sex scenes, smoking and drinking, smooches or embraces etc).

  • 92% customers of movies or YouTube videos are men while only a meager 8% are women. It is purely a business. They will go to any extend to impress their male audience. You could either bear this or settle watching TV serials.

Vyasan KP (Malayalam Filmmaker)

It is fascist to demand in the name of feminism that those which do not cater to their ideologies should either be attacked or banned...It is up to the director, screen writer and producer of Kasaba to decide on the kind of movie that they intend to make; not Parvathy or her organization.

Jude Antany Joseph (Malayalam Director) :

(Apparently Aimed at Parvathy)

“A monkey manages to get inside a circus tent. The monkey does the tricks as per the circus owner’s diktats and becomes an expert in the craft. Then the monkey badmouths the entire circus crew and the owners. The monkey complains of being exploited. The monkey could have left it all at first and gone to the forest. But then, if the monkey leaves the circus like that at the beginning, who will know it, right?”. Obviously, you won’t suddenly feel the urge to talk about circus monkies, right?

(Parvathy's Apparent Reply)

The text “OMKV” means ‘odra mone kandam vazhi‘ in Malayalam, which is a way of asking someone to get lost.

Hareesh Peradi (Malayalam - Tamil Actor) :

Feeling angry with the “Note Book”, who doesn’t know the ABC of acting, for badmouthing the text book of acting. Notebook is a reference to Parvathy's debut film and "textbook of acting" referes to Mammootty. However, Harees later apologised with the following statement : “though I didn’t mention the name directly, I am sorry to know that my words did hurt someone.”

Watch what Parvathy and Geethu Mohandas' video below and and tell us in your comments if their statements deserved all the noise surrounding it :
