Guddu Rangeela Music Review - "Assembly line Trivedi, but works"

Anup Pandey

Music: Amit Trivedi / Shubhash Kapoor

Lyrics: Irshad Kamil/ Gajendra Phoghat

1.  Guddu Rangeela

The title track is so inspired from Trivedi's own Allah Meherbaan from Ghanchakkar that it sounds like a rehash- similar arrangement, same singers (Trivedi himself and Divya Kumar). It is fun and catchy, nonetheless.

2. Sooiyan

Sooiyan is breezy romantic- just the kind of earworm you would like to have this monsoon. Only wish it was longer. Chinmayi Sripada debuts for Trivedi and she’s the most melodious part of the song.  She gets the best line too ("Yoon galat pate pe chhityaan bheju main naino ki").  The title hook flows well into the tune which sounds very Pritam'ish.

3. Sahebaan

Sahebaan continues on the same tempo as the last- Sooiyan, and feels like this was composed in the same sitting. It's the mellifluous Chinmayi here again, accompanied with contrasting Shahid Mallya- who just needs a dafli to pitch his voice on. The esraj is trademark Trivedi.

4. Guddu Rangeela Remix

Mallya replaces Trivedi on the vocal part for the remix version of the title track. Though each one is enjoying their part, their camaraderie doesn't come through alive. The tune is tweaked with many fun elements thrown around, but that costs the catchiness required.

5. Maata Ka Email

Composed by the director Shubhash Kapoor himself, this one is on the lines of trashy Jagraata music videos and the lyrics come close to the hilarious Roz Roz Facebook Pe Friend Banate Ho (YouTube it right away). Sung and penned by Haryana based singer Gajendra Phogahat, thankfully, it is not stretched for a regular length to make it sound funny.

This must have been an easy composition for Trivedi. Well, he had not much to do with- or maybe he didn’t want to, given the little scope of the album. Though it is a bit worrying that the composer has started to repeat himself, let's be happy that he hasn't disappointed.
