12. Viswasam (2019): OTT Platform: Amazon Prime Video


Ajith has done four movies with director Siva, and Viswasam is the most successful among them all. The action-drama co-starring Nayanthara, then-child artiste Anikha Surendran, and Jagapathi Babu among others, went on to dominate a Rajinikanth starrer at the box-office, and earned the film's music composer D Imman his first National award.     

 

11. Dheena (2001): OTT Platform: Eros Now Via Amazon Prime Video, Sun Nxt


Dheena earned Ajith Kumar his former nickname 'Thala', a title the actor officially let go of in December 2021. The movie marked the directorial debut of filmmaker AR Murugadoss. The gangster action co-starring Laila, Suresh Gopi, and the film's music by Yuvan Shankar Raja, to date enjoys a cult status among Ajith fans.

One of actor Ajith's earliest hits, Aasai written and directed by Vasanth and produced by Mani Ratnam is a romantic thriller co-starring Suvalukmi, Prakash Raj, Rohini among others. A political action thriller with Ajith donning multiple avatars, Citizen co-starring Vasundra Das, Meena, Nagma is a director Shankar-type big canvas movie, with a mix of elements like action, social message, romance, thrills and the works. The movie has screenplay, direction by Saravana Subbiah and music by Deva. 

 

8. Kadhal Kottai (1996): OTT Platform - Aha Tamil

Throughout the 90s, Ajith Kumar predominantly appeared in only romance movies in line with the 'boy-next-door' image the actor held. Kadhal Kottai co-starring Devayani and written, directed by Agathiyan is Ajith's most memorable love story from this lot. 

 

Kadhal Kottai stood out for its unique storyline of two pen-pals falling in love, and was remade in in Kannada [Yaare Neenu Cheluve (1998)], Bengali [Hothat Brishti (1998)] and Hindi [Sirf Tum (1999)]. The movie was a silver jubilee hit, and fetched three National Awards including Best Film in Tamil that year.

 

7. Billa (2007): OTT Platform - YouTube


In 1980, Rajinikanth remade Amitabh Bachchan's Don (1978) in Tamil as Billa. Actor Ajith Kumar gave this franchise a makeover by making it one of the most stylish films to come out of his career/ Tami cinema.

 

The sleek visuals, captivating storyline, and Ajith's charismatic portrayal of the titular character all contribute to Billa's reputation of a stylish and engaging film. The success of the movie is evident from the fact that it almost makes everyone forget the original Billa (1980).  

 

6. Kaadhal Mannan (1998) : OTT Platform - Aha Tamil, Amazon Prime Video, MX Player

Kaadhal Mannan co-starring late actor Vivek, is one of the earliest films in Ajith's career that paved way for his massy on-screen avatar. The film written and directed by Saran, rightly balances romance and action, serving as a perfect entertainer. Actress Maanu played female lead in this movie with Bharadwaj and MS Viswanathan handling the music. 

 

5. Yennai Arindhaal (2015): Tamil version is not streaming on any of the OTT Platforms

One of the best works of Ajith in recent years, Yennai Arindhaal written and directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon is a good example of what could happen when a star power joins a perfect team. Ajith gives a blast of a performance in this classy movie which co-stars Trisha, Arun Vijay, Anushka Shetty, then child artiste Anikha Surendran among others. The action thriller has music by Harris Jayaraj.

Based on Sense and Sensibility, the first novel by famous English author Jane Austen, Kandukondain Kandukondain with screenplay, direction by Rajiv Menon and dialogues by the late Sujata, is one of the most under-appreciated works of actor Ajith.

 

Ajith Kumar's character, and his refreshing performance of a desperate filmmaker and a hopeless romantic, stood out in the middle of so many powerful actors like Mammootty, Tabu, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abbas among others. 

 

The movie has cinematography by Ravi K Chandran and music by AR Rahman. 

 

3. Mankatha (2011): OTT Platform - Sun Nxt

Ajith is best known among the new generation Tamil cine audience for his 50th film Mankatha (2011). The actor's attitude as baddie 'Vinayak' is absolutely loved by his younger demographic, and that’s a package well delivered by director Venkat Prabhu. The movie stars Trisha as female lead and has Yuvan Shankar Raja for music.

It has been 24 years since Vaalee (1999) that marked the directorial debut of SJ Suryah released, and the movie is undisputedly considered the No: 1 film in actor Ajith Kumar's 31-year-old career. Ajith's loaded double roles in Vaali, his performance as a mute villain, and one of the most thrilling stories to grace Tamil cinema, is what makes the film special.

 

Valee also stars Simran, late actor Vivek, Jyothika in a cameo among others. The movie has music by Deva.
