Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithal - An enjoyable 'Romcon'!

Bharath Vijayakumar

You get into some movies without any preconceived notions or to be frank without any expectations and when they turn out to be pleasantly surprising you sort of feel guilty for having set a low bar for them. Desingh Perisamy's Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithal (K3) is precisely that film.

The success of a con film relies solely on whether the makers are a step ahead of you. You got to hand it over to the team of K3 for this. It is not as though the film flummoxes you or anything but right through its length it keeps you guessing and the twists are delicious. You are rooting for someone and then the equation changes and soon you realize it is best to sit back and have fun.

Dulquer and Rakshan are the two with whom the film begins. We get to know their partying lifestyle and what they do for a living. Enters a love angle and also a cop on a trail. So what are Dulquer and his friend actually doing for a living? K3 moves at what you call the optimum pace. Though it carries the cool vibe of a stylish con film, it never succumbs to the pressure of having to move at a breakneck speed. The twists and reveals are consistently good and none of them are jarring or out of tone. Simply put, there is nothing that seems out of place or bothers you nor does any twist seem force fitted.

The cast does a neat job and the performances are subtle. GVM is a superb choice. I honestly thought his casting was a gimmick but he fits the bill and the scene involving him at the end is a screamer. The light hearted feel right through is the USP of K3. But this coupled with the fact that we aren't really rooting for anyone in particular, robs the film from some of its tension. Could the film have been crisper? Possibly yes. There is a brief lull at the beginning of the second half but the film does really end on a high.

On a completely unrelated note, it is heartening that on a day where we have a film that wants to educate(?!) people on something called 'fake love', we have this film where everyone is not whom they seem to be and yet the only true emotion that matters at the end is Love. There is this line about how all they want is to stay together and having the wedding at a temple or church is immaterial to them. What would have been a mere dialogue otherwise made all the more sense given the times we live in. The fact that we do not get to know the actual name of one of the principal characters hardly bothers us. This should be a reminder to us that identity isn't in a name or background but who you really are!

Bottomline:

A very likable film is how you would define Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithal. It is that rare film that remains low key but provides some solid fun.
