The Tamil film industry could not have asked for a better start to 2019. Both Petta and Viswasam have taken off to flying starts at the box office across Tamil Nadu and rest of the world.
Tamil Nadu
According to reliable trade sources, both Petta and Viswasam are doing great business in Tamil Nadu and they are expected to combinedly gross ₹200 crore in the state in a week. Both the movies are expected to be profitable to distributors and exhibitors, which is a delightful news to the industry. Leading producer and distributor, G Dhananjayan, posted a Tweet confirming the same.
Whatever information trade is sharing with me & what I know, both #Petta & #Viswasam are big hits & going to make huge money for exhibitors, distributors & their Producers. My estimate is TN Box Office will earn Rs.200 crore in January itself due to these two films. Great show👍

Other states
In Karnataka and Kerala, Petta has approximately grossed three times more than Viswasam. Trade sources estimate that Petta grossed around ₹12 crore in Karnataka and ₹5 crore in Kerala from the opening weekend. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, only Petta had released and it has grossed around ₹5 crore from the opening weekend.
Overseas Box Office
Petta is miles ahead when it comes to overseas Box Office collections. It has grossed more than $5 million already, with close to $2 million coming from the USA alone.
In spite of the war of words between social media trackers and production houses, the stakeholders are happy that both Petta and Viswasam have been able to attract audiences and turn out to be profitable ventures everyone concerned.
