The movie lacks focus
The director has clearly missed out to focus on one plot and the screenplay suffers a lot due to this. It looks as if each sub-plot is treated separately and stringed together, rather than cohesively including them in the main plot. The movie ends in a rather contrived manner, which makes us think as if it has become a ritual to end all the small budget movies in this way.(more)

Sundattam is not entirely unwatchable
New boy Irfan is good and has done a neat job and so is rest of the cast. Songs are average but camera especially in the climax fight is laudable. But too much of drinking, smoking, snorting, muted bad language and violence will not appeal to family and lady audiences.(more)

Dev too finds himself with too many plot threads and no end in sight
But then Dev introduces the mandatory romantic track with the mandatory Ilaiyaraaja tribute song (En Uyir Thozhan's Raasathi...) and that is when the cracks begin to show. The track is as cliched as it comes with standard Tamil cinema components including a stiff-as-starch brother who is dead against their romance. More worryingly, this indifference spills over to the main plot involving the carom game. So, we get a needless sub-plot involving Amir, a rival gangster, and his plans to murder Annachi.(more)

This game is pointless
Cinematographer Balagurunathan has managed to intelligently eliminate most of the symbols that define 21st Century Chennai, by carefully lighting up his frames. The writer seems to have concluded that North Madras in the 1990s can be signified by merely including appropriate vehicle number plates and movie posters, and eliminating contemporary symbols. Sundattam shows promise
The good aspect of the film is its cinematography and the DI coloring. Balagurunathan's camera work makes every frame look realistic and rugged, but picturesque. The shots used when the characters are high with drugs are note-worthy. Secondly the DI coloring enhances the raw look of this period setup film.(more)
