Settai

Critics Review

Settai is a diluted version of Delhi Belly

Thaman has come up with catchy tunes again. The songs however contribute more as speed breakers than anything else. The director has however cleverly made sure that all the songs are crisp. The 'retro kuthu' song pictured on Premji with its lyrics that could have gone crude, has been tastefully done with restraint. The item song of Neetu Chandra however falls flat. Thankfully it runs during the opening credits.(more)

Comedy flick that works in parts

Thaman's tracks are fairly decent and well picturized by cinematographer Muthiah. However in the second half, the Agalathe number although good in looks and presentation, impedes the proceedings. The song on Premji 'Edhai than kandute' comes across as neat. Costumes of Deepali Noor are chic and colorful and bring a rich tone to the film.(more)

Watch it if you have not seen Delhi Belly.

Arya, Santhanam, and Premji's combo works big time. The dialogues mouthed by them will break the funny bones of the audience. Hansika and Anjali are equally good and they are glamorous too. Last but not least, Neetu Chandra's special song will be taken well. (more)

Settai is, sadly, a great disappointment.

The director has ruined a perfectly good script and has given an absolutely boring version of the exciting and racy Delhi Belly. From beginning to end, the film follows the same pace and all the scenes are so boring and slow, you could actually sleep through the entire movie. (more)

Rollicking Fun Ride

Settai has loads of one-liners and keeps you entertained, mainly toilet jokes tried out for the first time in Tamil cinema. John Mahendran's script makes it engaging and he has brought in a lot of humour into the narrative. Among the cast, Premgi is the best of the lot and his cartoonist character is believable. Nasser is good. (more)

Forget there was a Delhi Belly and you'll have a good time watching this film

Still, despite these compromises, if the film works, it is primarily because of Akshat Verma's script which exploits the comedy that arises out of the confusion resulting out of a switch. Though lacking a distinct flavour, some of John Mahendran's lines hit the bull's eye (Taste-a irundhalum chewing gum-a thuppi thaana aganum).(more)

See it for Santhanam

Kannan doesn't so much remake the earlier film as replicate it. The 'Saigal Blues' number there is mirrored in a bluesy version of 'Ponaal pogattum poda', the gag about eating a banana with a fork and knife is padded out with some unnecessary explanation, and even the casting is along expected lines - no one is surprised when the slightly effeminate dance instructor who lives on the floor above JK and his roommates is played by Manobala.
