A Confused Message Movie

Kootathil Oruvan tries to be a light-hearted film and also preach us. It is just able to pass muster with respect to the former and is confused about the latter. (more)

Kootathil Oruthan Movie Review

In addition to being the story of an average guy and his success, Kootathil Oruthan tries to also be one about his romance. This results in the film losing some of its lightness and feel-goodness. And worryingly, it uses the clich of a lying hero and a heroine who cannot forgive a lie to present us this romance. This results in the film turning into one mostly about Arvind's lies being discovered at any moment. And by the time the film gets back to its original theme, even the average person can be noteworthy, it is too late. These climactic portions have a semi-documentary feel, and are firmly in message-movie territory. And the director chooses to tie up the romantic track, too, and this leads to an unintentionally funny end. No wonder then that this film about an average guy ends up being unexceptional.(more)

Feel-good

Kootathil Oruthan is easily the best performance of Ashok Selvan, his nerd look and innocent mannerisms are a big advantage to the film. Priya Anand has got a strong role, which is very much similar to her role in the big hit Ethir Neechal and she has done a good job. Samuthirakani once again shines in a pivotal role and Bala Saravanan's timing comic one liners work at times. (more)

Kootathil Oruthan is a feel good film that ends with a much needed social message

Kootathil Oruthan is not just bitter or sweet but everything in between as well. It has the elements of an emotionally gripping story. It is absorbing but also has its share of template drama which at times gets a little overwhelming.(more)

love of averages

The film together is the sincerity with which the leads have acted, aided almost only by the music. It feels like a story weve seen so often in films like VIP, Ethir Neechal, Kaaki Sattai and more. But instead of celebrating the ordinary, Kootathil Oruthan ends up being yet another zero-to-hero story, hardly engaging with the wonderful 'in-between' it promised to be. The film's title, unfortunately, defines it as well. Its just one among the crowd.(more)
