An exasperating watch

A hearing and speaking impaired girl is stranded in a huge palace like house and is on the run within the premises to safeguard herself from a mysterious killer. Forget everything else and this scenario alone should suffice to give you atleast a semblance of fear right? But the film leaves you scratching your head. I had midway resigned to the fact that the film isn't going to be tolerable but was atleast hoping that it would fall into the 'so bad that it's good' category with some unintended comedy to the rescue.(more)

A wishy-washy film with plodding screenplay and lackluster execution

Kolaiyuthir Kaalam is one of the weakest heroine centric-films of Nayanthara in recent times. But you can't blame her, the director got it all wrong despite inspired by a well-made thriller.(more)

Nayanthara struggles to stay relevant in a patchy thriller

The problem is, nobody seemed remotely interested in Kolaiyuthir Kaalam. Not even its director Chakri Toleti whose Billa 2 I'm a fan of. So, why expect us to take it seriously?(more)

A textbook example on how not to make a slasher flick

Nayanthara is the only saving grace of the film, and having already played a deaf person in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, she looks close to perfect as the vulnerable and helpless Shruthi. And yet, it is hard for us to root for Shruthi who remains clueless till the very end. As clueless as we are about why this remake was made in the first place.(more)

Even Nayanthara, the Lady Superstar, seems ordinary and cannot save the film.

The film fails right in its set-up. These initial portions, which should have made us care for Shruthi, are so badly directed, with terrible line readings that seem straight out of a dubbed film, that we lose interest right away. And the portions involving the slasher, too, are laughably executed that we neither feel horrified nor thrilled. (more)

Nayanthara cannot survive this thriller, that has nothing going for it

The film has turned out to be a crashing bore and disappointing. It has turned out to be Nayan's weakest film in recent times, and should have remained in the cans. The writing and screenplay is a total mess as in more than half the film, there is no dialogue as the central character is deaf and mute. And technically, the film has nothing going for it, including its jarring background score. (more)
