Rubaai Movie Review

Rubaai has an interesting plot, with a few engaging scenes. But the interchanging romantic and thrilling scenes do not work always. Anbazhagan has managed to link elements like friendship, deceit, love and greediness and entertain to a good extent. Harish Uthaman as the cruel baddie and Chinni Jayanth, in a different avatar as a doting dad, score above others in the movie. Though the songs are decent enough and hummable, they mar the narration at times.(more)

Well intended but not without flaws

The film drives home a point that greed for money is the root cause of all evil. Anbazhagan's dialogues are good and he does not go overboard and is never preachy. The first half moves slowly. But, the tragic climax looks forced and is not creating the necessary impact.(more)

Not paisa vasool

The film falters towards the end, the director has to be commended for not being as overtly advisory about the message he wants to convey. There are clever subversions throughout this film, which rides on the shoulders of Chinni Jayanth and Harish Uthaman. Perhaps with better lead actors and sharper dialogues, this film could have been a real paisa vasool. In its present form, its just all right.(more)

Carries a familiar message

Anbazhagan has lifted the premise and the villain character from No Country For Old Men directed by the Coen brothers which is one of the most influential films of the modern era. However, it is difficult for the audience to root for the lovers Anandhi and Chandran as there are not enough scenes to build their love organically. Unlike Anton Chigurh, played chillingly deep by Javier Bardem in NCFOM Harish Uttamans character is written on the surface level and hence is not potent enough to match one of the greatest villains in world cinema. The killer leaves a blatantly clear trail and the cops still take time till the climax to near him. Similarly, there is no tension or feeling of impending danger to the heroes as their tormentor is just one step behind them all the time and we know their fates much before it arrives. The forced tragic climax also does not make the slightest impact whatsoever.(more)
