Damp Squib

Yaakai shows occasional flashes of what a good thriller it could have been. These flashes are too minimal to keep our spirits up in an otherwise tiring film(more)

Plot is an oft-told one

Guru Somasundram is a total miscast. As Sriram the bad boy with angst against his father, he is inconsistent and far removed from his assured performance as in 'Joker'. Unsure of how to essay a role that is weakly etched, the actor is loud and dramatic in his take on Sriram. Of about 127 minutes of viewing time, 'Yaakkai' is a monotonous journey, unexciting and uninteresting(more)

Underwhelming and boring

Throughout the film, the director takes the audiences for granted with amateurish writing and execution. Except for the visuals and Yuvan's score nothing really works. To conclude, this is nothing but clumsy writing and execution. Better to stay away!(more)

Go for it if you are a fan of Yuvan or Swathi to bear the ordeal.

Director Kulandai Velappan obviously does not believe in the wise screenwriting principle "Get in late, get out early". All his scenes are unnecessarily detailed and lengthy ushering in boredom. It is perplexing why he used the deaf and dumb backdrop when those characters don't even appear in the tragic funeral scene. Inconsistent characterisations don't help either.(more)

Yaakkai Movie Review

This parallel narration does somewhat keep us hooked for a while, but we are soon able to guess who is committing the murders and our interest wanes. It doesnt help that we start predicting the scenes that follow after that. And the Kathir-Kavitha relationship keeps getting sillier and sillier. In the end, the effort to make the romance something divine (like the one in Ghajini) doesnt move us one bit.(more)
