Strong Technicalities and Mani Ratnam touches make Kaatru Veliyidai a worthy watch.

Kaatru Veliyidai is a classical poetic love story. It is not a film to watch but something to experience. An experience that not everyone would accept. Some may blame it for being sluggishly made but some may fall in love with it. There are plenty of silences, classic old school close-ups and slow-motion shots. Some might find it mawkish but some may enjoy that treatment too. However, the screenplay is not gripping enough to move the story forward. There are some slack moments which make the audience a little restless. But if you are a fan of slow paced love stories, Kaatru Veliyidai may work for you.(more)

Kaatru Vilayadu is an experience you must enjoy.

The beauty of Mani Ratnam films lies in its unpredictability, but Kaatru Veliyidai has a story which gives us a feel that we've seen it so many times. The climax looks tad weak, the scenes where Karthi escapes from a Pakistan jail looks convenient filled with logical loopholes.(more)

Kaatru Veliyidai Movie Review

However, the film is saved to an extent by the technical proficiency on display. Right from Ravi Varman's lush visuals to Rahman's peppy score and Sharmishta Roy�s realistic sets, the film is a treat technically. And Mani Ratnam, the director, can still make a scene feel lively and fresh with his staging. He gives us the quirks that we have come to expect in his films, like the episode involving VC�s family, where we instantly get the traits of his family members in swift strokes or the conversation between RJ Balaji (a military doctor) and Rukmini Vijayakumar (a civilian doctor, like Leela). It is really unfortunate that the rest of his writing here doesn't inspire the same kind of awe.(more)

Underwhelming love saga

Visually, Kaatru Veliyidai is beautiful, beyond anyone�s imagination. Each frame is like a painting and Ravi Varman as the cinematographer deserves more than just praise. It is amazing how Ratnam uses the beautiful backdrop of Kashmir and a few other places throughout the film to paint a troubled love story and to highlight the different facets of love.(more)
