Thodari Review - Prabhu Solomon's "Speed" is gripping, mostly

Prabhu Solomon's script is in a way for unique for Tamil audience due to its settings. The comic dialogue exchanges are good. Prabhu Solomon's level of detailing backed by train service related research is impressive. The way the director envisions individual scenes and how it blends in the story seamlessly is well scripted. Director tries to be very logical, factual and research oriented in majority of the scenes (physics of jumping between carriages when train is cruising at 120kmph). However, In a few other scenes, director takes cinematic liberties as Dhanush fights single-handedly and overpowers a dozen bad guys on top of a fast-moving train.(more)

Strong script which could have worked better, if there were no compromises.

It is nice to see Prabhu Solomon come out of his comfort zone and try to make an experimental film like this. Though you would find logical loopholes, it engages you throughout. At the end of the day its love and you will hear a lot of heartwarming flowery dialogues that don't gel with reality, but it's fine as long as the audience accepts it. Still, one feels the melodramatic pre-climax portion could have been treated differently.(more)

An adventurous journey is letdown by the lengthy screenplay, meaningless dialogues and horrible comedy.

Prabhu Solomon's films are mostly like a poem, it comes right from the woods with a melody, and the screenplay just flows with the characters, 'Thodari' doesnt click here at all. The dialogues too which serve as a backbone for most films looks amiss with most of the conversations coming without any motive at all. Why Dhanush and Harish fight, why there is an air of confusion in the media, and so many questions are unanswered The artwork inside the train and the setup is completely laudable, however the VFX doesnt seem spot on and doesnt give that thump factor. Imman gives his best in both the songs and the BGM suits the movies journey milieu right on the money. If at all there is a reason to watch Thodari it is Dhanush, Keerty and Radha Ravi's acting and a few thrills in the second half.(more)

Thodari Review

In his previous film, Kayal, Prabu Solomon exploited a disaster like the 2004 tsunami to shore up a romantic tale. In Thodari, he exploits the romance between his leads to mount a near-disaster. He alternates between comic and mock-serious tones and that helps us overlook the tackily staged romantic and thriller portions. The almost two-dozen supporting actors (from Radha Ravi, Karunakaran and Darbuka Siva to A Venkatesh and Chinni Jayanth) help keep us from getting bored while Dhanush, who is used more for his star value, is in fine B-movie form, gamely providing comedy, romance and heroism.(more)

The train doesn't derail but the film's plot does

Even a powerful star like Dhanush has been underutilised in the film, thanks to the paltry script and its treatment. A pantry boy falls in love with a make-up artist and they are both aboard a speeding train. A gang of highly-suspicious dacoits gets aboard the train after fooling the police force. In the middle of all this is a ridiculous central minister (veterinary!), accompanied by a hot-headed NSG commando. (more)
