Quite Engaging But Lacks The Punch!!!

A template revenge drama that works for a while as it keeps things under wraps for quite sometime. But the flimsy flashback plays spoilsport.(more)

A Watchable revenge thriller

As mentioned earlier in the review, Caarthick could've opted for a better hero for this script. Ulkuthu demands a star rather than an actor. Further, Dinesh still has the Cuckoo hangover, his eyes are not expressive, and the actor should seriously consider reinventing himself to stay long in the showbiz.(more)

Packs the punch despite a conventional story

While its becoming a fad for directors to romanticize dons and rowdies on the big screen, Caarthick has a different message for his audience. That living a better life is no substitute to the vanity and gethu that these characters seem to ooze out. The director has also let a sneak into how the henchmen deal with power games and situations like the killing of a gang member, in a real, unadulterated way. (more)

A tried and tested revenge drama that has its moments.

Dinesh gets to play another weird character. Though he has tried to do his best, you feel there is something lifeless about his role. Maybe the purpose of his doing is not satisfactory and the way it is treated is a tad artificial. Nandita gives a functional performance while John Vijay and Chaya Singh do not get much scope to showcase their range. (more)

ULKUTHU MOVIE REVIEW

Despite the familiar arc of its storyline, Ulkuthu is fairly engaging, mainly because Caarthick Raju introduces minor variations into situations that we have seen earlier. We think Raja's humiliation of Saravanan in public will lead to an everlasting enmity, but in the next few scenes, he refreshingly changes their equation. When Kaaka Mani kills an underling, we brush it off as something that is regular, as we have seen many bosses do this onscreen, but here, that has consequences. The way Sura Shankar's punchline (Sura Shankar-na summava) is used to inject humour every time it is used works very well. The use of kabaddi to show intimidation and superiority is also a nice touch. Most importantly, the director keeps the suspense around Raja intact well until the second half, and keeps us guess. Yes, his backstory is a cliche, but even here, we get a friendship angle that mirrors what's happening in the present.(more)

Cinematography is good

Just when you think the story is traveling in a clichid manner, Caarthik injects a spin and turns things upside down. Justin Prabhakaran's music elevates the proceedings and PK Varma's cinematography is good especially the aerial view of the coastal areas.(more)

Action elevates this routine revenge saga starring Dinesh, Dhilip Subbarayan

Ulkuthu does full justice to the title but doesnt quite leave us in awe. Nevertheless, it isn't a bad film and director Caarthick Raju deserves praise for making it work despite how predictable it gets in the end.(more)

The routine don saga

At the end of the film, one cannot help but think that this film - if at all it deserves to be made in the first place - should have been done by a slightly bigger star, who is comfortable in a film where he is all powerful and invincible. After acting in movies such as Visaranai, one wishes that Dinesh focuses on movies that challenge him and his abundant talent, instead of movies that present a significant challenge to the audience.(more)
