Masala Padam Review - An Idea does not make a film

Masala Padam – An Idea does not make a film

Bharath Vijayakumar

Masala Padam wants to make a strong statement about the current trend of trolling movies through social media. With an interesting and relevant idea at it's core does the film have enough spice in it?

Plot:

A producer throws a challenge at a group of online movie bloggers to make a successful movie devoid of the cliches that they troll.

Cast:

Siva saves us from a lot of desperation. Without his trademark oneliners the mere 110 minutes of the film would have been a desert with not a water droplet at sight. Bobby Simha has little to do but looks convincing as the ruffian. Lesser said about the remaining cast the better. Almost each one of them tests our patience.

Direction:

The film could have not had a better timed release. Whether last week's huge release 'Puli' was unfairly targetted by the social media is a rather hot topic among film buffs at the moment. The initial twenty minutes of the film looks like a talk show with the exception that it is less exciting than those shown on TV. The actors look woefully out of place. The dialogue in the climax hits the bulls eye in explaining the popularity of commercial hero vehicles in cinema. There are are a few such sparkles here and there. But the film as a whole does not hold you at any point. There is no sense of flow to the proceedings. One boring bit follows the other. This is the sort of film which probably lost it completely on translation to the screen. And this is a pity given that the idea is refreshing.

Bottomline:

Masala Padam wants to stress that making a film is a difficult job. But inadvertently it actually shows that sometimes viewing a film could also be arduous.
